HD recognized but not camera

I am having a problem getting my camera recognized in Vegas 5.
I have removable drives that are recognized thru the firewire port but when I connect my sony camera and/or DVD recorder that both are normally recognized thru the firewire port neither shows up under windows or Vegas .
I'm using XP as an operating system.

Thanks for any suggestions

Go to Control Panel/System Devices.
Right click the cam, choose Update Driver. Choose to MANUALLY install it. (Don't search, I will install)
Now, browse to the Sound, Video, Game controllers.
Then browse to Sony. Not the Sony Electronics folder. In there, you'll find a driver called DVHS. Double Click it. It will update. You should see the cam come in then.

Thanks very much for your response. I should have mentioned that the DVD recorder is a JVC.
But when I search after I choose to manually install the driver I can't find the Sound, Video, Game controllers folder. I can find it in a seperate search under Device manager but can't find it in the browse for folder window where I'm trying to manually install the driver.

Does the fact that the JVC recorder dosen't show up either indicate that it could be a different issue then a driver update?
Really appreciate your help on this.

The DVHS driver should work for the JVC's, too, but it's been over a year since I've worked with one, and don't have one here to test....Sorry! JVC DVD recorder? Which model?

The JVC Recorder is a DR-M10Ss. I output directly from the timeline to the JVC to create my DVDs. Does a great job.
I tried to search for the dvhs driver on my computer buy couldn't find it that way either.

Sorry, I gave you bad advice. I was thinking you meant the JVC DVD *camcorder* not drive.
I don't know how to make that drive show up if DVD Architect or Vegas aren't seeing it. Sorry for the mistake on my part.

that's no problem but............ Both the camcorder and the DVD recorder will not show up in 2 other computers that have a similar configuration as mine, so I've elimanated not having the correct driver as the issue. .

Yesterday both devices would show up in my computer when connected via firewire(new cable) today neither unit shows up on 3 different computers.
All the other feauters work fine on both units. The camera will record on tape and playback normally, the DVD recorder will playback a DVD no problem but neither unit will show up at all when conected to a pc.

I feel like I'm missing something really basic as it seems like it's way to much of a coincidence that this same issue would show up on both units at the same time.
I live in Southern Utah and the a/c went out yesterday the temps in my studio were well over 100 I'm thinking either my brain got fried or the heat somehow
effected the firwire output.maybe both. It's just to weird Hopping you might have another idea?

I'd try eliminating all other firewire devices on the system, and systematically testing this drive as the only device.
You may need to install a second Firewire card.

You in the Washington County area? You guys have had it all this year....flood, fire, drought....and then you lose your AC? Ouch!
I'll be passing through this week on our way to the WEVA show.

I'm in St George.... so this maybe the pestilence that comes after the flood, fire, and drought.

I have isolated both units and had each one at a time on 3 different PCs. On each PC other cameras and firewire hard drives will show up just fine just not the sony Digital 8 or the JVC DVD Recorder
I hate to think that I gotta go out and buy both a camera and DVD recorder.

Ever hear about something like this happening?

Thought I'd try to simplify the situation.

With the "my computer" folder open
I connect my sony vx2000 via firewire the camera shows right up as a device. I then discount the vx2000 and connect the sony digital 8 to the same
cable but it dosen't show up
I then connect my JVC DVD recorder up to the same cable dosen't show up. Both devices are turned on.
Reconnect the VX 2000 to the same cable and it shows right up.

I get the same results on 3 different computers.
Yesterday all 3devices would show up.
Any ideas?
