HD to DV in Vegas

Hey guys,

If I'm shooting in HD, but I want to deliver a version in DV without letterboxing, are there any special things I should keep in mind?

I'm assuming that I need to de-click the "maintain aspect ratio" in the Properties->Video Event Tab. Do I also need to change the pixel aspect ratio in the Properties-> media tab of the event?

I have the main project properties set for NTSC DV (720x480, 29.970 fps).

Is this correct? Anything else I need to do or be aware of?

Thanks,

Joe

To avoid letterboxing you'll need to render to 16:9 (also called widescreen).
Because you're downscaling you must select a de-interlace method in the prject properties otherwise you'll get some nasty jaggies.
You don't need to wrangle pixel aspect ratio, Vegas will take care of that for you.
Your project really should be NTSC Widescreen.
I'd actually suggest you use a HDV 60i project and render from that to NTSC DV Widescreen.

One other way you can do this that's dead simple if all you want is a SD DV tape is use your camera / VCR to do the downconvert and capture the tape as regular Widescreen DV. Then PTT back to DV.

Bob.
