HDD or minDV

I'm looking to get a new camcorder and need some advice on formats. I'm looking to either get HDD or miniDV as these seem to suit my needs most, but I'm reading conflicting advice on these formats. Firstly, I'm reading that HDD cameras record in MPEG2 which isn't as good as AVI on miniDV so I'd rather go miniDV, and then I'm reading that miniDV is old technology and is being phased out in which case I'd rather go HDD. Is this all true?
Bearing in mind that most of the short films I make (usually about 5 mins duration) get shown a couple of times on a fairly large screen (about 8' square) then get put online, how much better quality is miniDV? How much longer is it likely to be supported? Have you any recommendations as to what camera to get around the £300 mark.
