HDMI can i

Is it possible to capture from an HDMI cable or is firewire the better option?
Also is it legal to capture HDMI? ‘’ the Johns would know”

I am very interested in capturing to a notepad or laptop as it makes sense visually and storage wise but what format would I capture in?
1.The one cam is a Sony PD 170
2. the other is a Canon HG10 AVCHD

Would the Canon send AVCHD format to the laptop? Can you do this?
What and how? I’ve never done this and will go and buy a laptop based on the replies I get

Really guys thanks for all your help my workflow and editing has improved a lot since coming to this forum

There are cards now from several companies that allow you to capture over HDMI; HDMI and HDCP are related, but they are not the same thing. Chances are that if you can get the signal onto an HDD using HDMI as the pipe, it's legal to capture.
Firewire is the common "old school' option; card device is 'new school' and HDMI will become more common, I predict.

AFAIK all AVCHD cams don't have a firewire port, they only have USB for tranfering the data to PC. However my Canon HF 10 has an option "Comp Out" which the manual say's is HDMI output to a TV / HDTV.

Is there anyway to preview on a Notebook / Laptop or any other small portable screen?

XFX and I are working together on a project that's why our questions are similar and we know we'll get some practical help here.

Here's how people have done it with a laptop. First you need a PCIE adapter that fits in the laptop's PC Card slot.

Second, you then plug a Blackmagic Design Intensity or Intensity Pro card

into the PCIE adapter. Third and most important, you need an extremely fast hard disk in the laptop.

All this effort is pretty much a waste of time and money with an HF10, as everything outputted by the camcorder has already been compressed in AVCHD. USB and or Firewire input is more than enough for this camcorder, as is taking the removable memory card out of the HF10 and putting it directly in a reader on the laptop.

as to monitor, you can preview to any small monitor that has an HDMI input (or DVI with a converter) and supports the output resolution of 1080i.

Thanks for the links and info.

I agree with you about the capture, we just want to preview on a larger screen.
