HDMI capture card (x-post)

I'm looking for suggestions regarding an HDMI video capture card (and perhaps the rest of the hardware to support it). I need to capture HD video from a couple of devices that have HDMI output and, of course, I'll be editing it with Vegas 8. HDCP and copy protection are not an issue. I've been reading reviews of BlackMagic's Intensity Pro card, and they're all good, but none of them mentions compatibility with Vegas, although other Windows editing suites are mentioned.

What are you people using to transfer HD video (up to 1080p) to your PC for editing?

I have been using BlackMagic's Intensity Pro card to capture MJPEG footage. Unfortunately, I can't use that footage with Vegas because BM's MJPEG codec can't be read by Vegas. I have to process it through an intermediate lossless format.

If you intend to use the much larger uncompressed formats, you'll probably be fine. But I don't know, I haven't tried. Good luck.

This problem with the BMD codec has been posted before. Upgrade the BMD codec and drivers to version 1.8.4 and Vegas 8 P will read the files just fine, so I'm told. I'm running Vista x64 and BMD hasn't updated those drivers yet.

Yes, BMD MJPEG files now work fine in WinXP using the v1.8.4 Intensity drivers. BMD has not yet released v1.8.4 for any of the 64bit Windows operating systems.

jabloomf1230 & John - Thanks for the heads up! I've been using the 1.8.2 driver and hadn't noticed that BMD updated it. I just installed it on my machine and it works fine.

This will save me a ton of time!

Hey John,

Since you have 1.8.4, does it have some new settings for frame rates?

You can also use the Aja Xena card (which is fully supported by Vegas) and then use the New Black Magic HDMI to SDI converter box. It's a little more convoluted, but you might be able to get deck control too.

I was checking the BMD site last night and watched the online promo video for the new card that is out that I guess replaces the other ones and which fits what I need. It specifically mentions Vegas as compatible. So has anyone used this latest card listed and if so what driver? Main thing is if Vegas can properly read the BMD file now and then output however you wish to whatever deck format you want. Thanks
