Do a search on the Vegas Database and you should find quite a few recent entries under:

24
DVX-100
HD (Unfortunately, you will get a lot of his on both Hard Drives and High Def)
High Definition

It does native 16:9 from a DSR 500WS DVCAM and D35/DNV5 BetaSX fine. Only problem I had was letterboxing it without aliased straight lines. Finally resorted to squishing the rough footage through the AVID Media Composer, looks great. Apparently Boris Red can letterbox without the aliasing effect.

Done a lot with HD downsampled to DV, using the Laird. Vegas can't do 1080i no matter what.
Vegas also doesn't support 24p. only one or two apps do at this time. Most everyone is promising near releases.

Not to contradict Spot, but AFAIK Vegas supports 24p, just not the 24p/60 that the Pana outputs.

There are some apps that do the voodoo to remove the extra frames that the pana puts in, to achieve 24p, Vegas does not.

If you have actual 24p video (from let's say DVfilmmaker?), I think Vegas can work with it. Plus, Vegas can nicely convert 24fps to 29.97 in the same fashion as a telecine; with 3:2 pulldown.

(Somebody please correct me if I'm mistaken here)

Talk is cheap, and there's been a TON of talk about 24pDV, some of it correct, some of it obviously wrong...hard to sort it all out.

We have a Panasonic 24pDV camera coming our way- once we actually have it we'll be able to post accurate info, discuss the pitfalls and strengths of the different modes, use of this camera with DVFilm and other tools... and we'll also post some sample clips (legit ones, not wave-around-on-auto or pointless frame grabs).

Anyway, stay tuned- this topic will addressed in more detail be shortly after Vegas4 ships.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. Am I right then in assuming that VV 4.0 will work with
DVFilmmaker to deal with 24p? Or, is it intended that some version of VV 4 will
deal with it alone? It seems to me to be very important, especially as 24p seems
to have arrived at a not to insane price. I don't want to go down the Mac route
to do HD, especially as I am so impressed with Vegas 3.0!

HDTV, 24p, the U.S. was supposed to be switched over a while ago, weren't we? ;?p

New specs, existing hardware that is out of specs, specs that seem in constantly morphing states, surpised SonicEPM stayed so cool on the frustrating subject.

Still, if you've got the bucks & aspirations, it's cheaper then film, and as I understand it there's a demand from corporate when trade show time comes around, so I'm sure they'll handle it.

OK. I'm ready. What's the news?

Hi Tim, all...

V4 has a bug (or the MC encoder does)... it *can* output MPEG2 at resolutions higher than 800x800. Users over at the cow are outputting 1920x1080 and the like. This *bug* may be eliminated in the next build.

Vegas has always been able to edit 24p. Getting 24p has been the issue. DVfilmmaker now states clearly on their website that the footage from a Pana-cammy can be converted with no loss to "true 24p" and edited in Vegas.

The future???

We will be watching the JVC Quasi-HD cameras to see what output will be available to use in Vegas.

Stay tuned.
