HDV and MiniDV capture not supported in Vegas 17?

Hello,

I recently pulled my Sony HDR-HC7 and Sony DCR-TRV900 camcorders out of hibernation and tried to capture some old footage on my Windows 10 PC.

The cameras show up in Device Manager as "Sony DV Camcorder" under Imaging Devices.

However, the "Default - Vegas Video Capture" utility gives the error "The device 'Basler GenICam Source' could not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on and is not being used by another application or user."

So I searched the internet for a workaround and downloaded old copies of WinDV and HDVSplit.

With Vegas 17 closed, WinDV captured MiniDV footage like a pro from the DCR-TRV900 and HDVSplit captured footage from the HDR-HC7 like a dream.

Did they drop support for these cameras or in the capture utility? Or what could be the problem?

BTW, I still have Vegas 10 installed, and that also showed the problem.

Yep, support was dropped.... DV and HDV Captures are of poor quality now and are no longer a used medium with everything now digital and easier. So WinDV and HDV Split are the best solution..... Even back in the days of MiniDV Tapes, WinDV is what i used to do all my captures, never a dropped frame.

Thanks for the confirmation! I chuckled a bit, though, because these old camcorders are having a bit of a resurgence with the young crowd these days. (I'm 64!) The "poor quality" is "in" these days due to it's retro look. ;-)

If you are using old capture devices and cameras you also need to use an old computer and old software. It was really impossible for us to maintain this workflow.

For DV, my favorite is Scenalyzer Live. It's still available and is now free. http://www.scenalyzer.com/
