HDV editing help needed

I am just getting started with the HDV business and would like some help from those who are already there. I am using the HDR-FX7 camcorder and Vegas Studio 7. Right away I found that the .m2t files were jerky on the timeline and in the trimmer. From elsewhere in this forum I have read about "Render as" function. But I don't see the choices that have been mentioned. Do I want to render this to the .avi file for editing?
Then how do I get it back to HDV for tape? When I select to save it back to the camcorder, it says there is no print device available...
Any thoughts appreciated

It's really to much to type in to answer all your questions.

Everything you want to know is in the help files and documentation that comes with VMS.
For a business I would use the Full Vegas Edition and also consider down the line getting a Mac Desktop Pro dual Xeon computer along with Final Cut Pro and some other apps.

FX1 is a nice cam. Make sure to use good HDV Sony tapes with it to preserve the heads.

You're on the right track... just render your HD clips to SD copies, use these to edit (cuts, transitions, effects etc) then, when you're happy with the edit just right-click the SD files in the Project Media panel and select "Replace" then select the HD equivalents. Wait for them to load then "Make Movie" back to Hard Drive.
Close Movie Studio, connect your cam and set it to VCR, open Movie Studio, New Project, Make Movie, select "use previous file" and dig out the edited .m2t file, press the cameras Record button and the Edit button paired with it together and then straight away press the Pause button. This will leave it in Pause/Record mode. When you send the movie (manual option) you'll get a 10 second countdown, just before it finishes press the Pause button again and the cam will start recording. Good luck.

I've just been through this 'Replace' process for the first time (using VMS Platinum 6). I called Sony for guidance and the tech support rep. explained that since Non-linear editing simply uses references to frames to control the editing process, replacing an .avi file with the original .m2t file will work (this being done on a clip by clip basis). However, something didn't work too well for me. I was using some test video, just two small clips. The first clip seemed to replace OK, but after the Replace function, the second clip included footage I had "removed" during the editing process.
Any ideas on this one?
