Anybody editing HDV using Vegas Pro 8 on a laptop? I know that the minimum processor recommended for HDV editing is 2.8 mhz. What brand of laptop would you also consider? If it is a real bad idea I need to know that as well! Thanks for your thoughts!
Using a MacBook Pro Core Duo. Isn't near as fast by today's standards but solid and not bad for HDV editing at all. It's not a desktop by any means but if you're looking for a desktop replacement, I've had great luck with the Apple products, HP and Sager.
2.8mhz would be awfully slow :P (sorry couldn't resist).
I'd suggest 1.8 Ghz or faster ( I've done it on my HP DV9000 with a core2duo 1.83 Ghz and it does alright, however it's certainly easier on my Core2Quad in my office.
I edit on a 5.5 year-old 2.8 GHz single thread, single CPU, single core desktop, and it works fine (although the renders are slow). I also edit on an old Dell laptop. I just looked up the specs on the Dell site: Pentium M Dothan, 2.0GHZ, 2 MEGB. This is actually faster than my 2.8 GHz desktop, because it is multi-threading. I consider this my "new" computer even though I bought it back in November 2005.
When mobile I use an HP with an AMD Turion X2 64 TL-58 which is 1.96GHZ. Even though I am using the system drive for all the storage, HDV is not any trouble at all. I miss the multiple monitors and those kind of desktop features, but I get the job done.
As far as off-the-shelf laptops, I really, really was impressed with the HP I had. I've had Sager and Nobilis custom builds, but for the price and performance, that HP was a great machine. With the Matrox Triple Head-to-go interface, you could run just laptop or laptop to external monitors. Pretty sweet if you don't wanna make the investment for both laptop and desktop but want dual (or more) monitors.
