HEIC problems - Vegas Pro 22 (194) ???

Been trying to do an edit with quite a few (100 or so) HEIC photo's from apple phones. It is blowing up both my ThreadRipper 1950x - Radeon 7 desktop with 32 gigs of ram and my ThinkPad i9, RTX 5000 ADA with 128 gigs of ram. Have legacy AVC and HVAC selected in preferences.

 

It takes about 4 seconds to preview each image that are only 2 seconds long in the timeline. Then occasionally the whole program hangs for sometimes up to a minute or more. The file takes about 15 mins to load in the first place.

 

This issue is happening exactly the same on both machines and must be something to do with Vegas Pro 22 not liking these files.

 

Any suggestions as to what I might have plucked up or could change to get this to edit even remotely?

@petecarney Hi, I have a Samsung S23 Ultra phone but it does make HEIC files, these play fine it VP22.

Have legacy AVC and HVAC selected in preferences.

I don't know much about these files & looking MediaInfo it screams HEVC 🤷‍♂️

PS, MediaInfo shows 146 images 🤷‍♂️ & VP doesn't show on the timeline.

Thanks Gid, but I'm not having issues with just one images it's when I put in lots of them on the timeline. Takes over 3 minutes to load the veg file before I can even look at one image preview window. This is with only 60 images on the timeline and no fx or sizing going on at all yet.

 

Loads fine in VP16 as I just drug all the timeline over there. Hmmmm ????

@petecarney Sorry if I made it sound all sweet & Rosy in that first comment, it's not.

 They seem to play fine but there is a slight delay with this file, loading it takes just a moment to think, playing is the same it takes a moment & then plays, deleting the file from the timeline takes a moment & starting a new project it also has to have a brief moment. That's why I inc the screen capture of the non existent timeline thumbnail, I was sort of suggesting not all was well.. but once playing they seem to be ok.

This is playing, when i click play the timeline cursor jumps as if catching up.

I did add a few but because they're duplicates & all the same file it didn't lag with each one when playing, your's will each be different.

I just tried cropping that single image, play slowed a lot, I added a bit of colour & play showed the four thinking dots a lot & carried on thinking when I stopped play, this pic is a couple of seconds after stopping play,

There are HEIC to JPG/PNG batch converters on the Microsoft Store. I tried to do the conversion in Photoshop using Scripts/Image Processor but the required HEIC extension from Microsoft didn't seem to work for decoding on this Windows 10 machine. The extension is poorly rated, also.

Standalone program Real HEIC to JPG Converter on the Microsoft Store worked and Vegas ran fine with the JPG files it produced.

After cutting and rendering the "opening of the presents", I reloaded a gold system image and installed the Microsoft HEVC and HEIC extension. This time the Photoshop script worked for batch converting. I chose PSD since Vegas handles it fine and I'm a Photoshop user anyway. JPEG, PNG or TIFF will work. Check back for updates to see if VCS gets the decoder worked out.

I think the HEIC extension is poorly rated because people resent paying money for a codec.

Thanks guys. This one has been a struggle for sure. I finally gave up and just bought an HEIC to JPG converter. I haven't gotten back to try the JPGS yet, but they seem to be working fine in VP22. Will check back and let you know if I ever find another solution.

I'd love to get a sample HEIC file. I have the HEIC M$ extension. I got it a couple of years ago, along with the HEVC extension when M$ offered it for free.

You can find the extension HERE. Again, I installed it when it was first offered. I don't know if anything else I've installed (such as Paintshop Pro) which might also include something to decode it.

Never mind. I found a sample and it is showing in VP22.

@john_dennis The decode is fast using the Windows10 build in editor, slow using Vegas

@petecarney Vegas is unstable and slow with these files, crashed twice when using 15 HEIC files, VP22 doesn't seem to be worse, it's functions same as VP20, the problem is VP22 never got any better. rendering these files was slower compared to VP20 but that's due to a general slowness in encoding in VP22 rather than decoding of HEIC getting slower (my understanding)

If we stipulate that the HEIC format might be more efficient with disk usage and possibly other factors not related to real-time video preview, the design doesn't appear to optimized for easy decoding and reassembling of (in the case of my iPad) thirty-five 512 x 512 pixel blocks of information into one 3219x3262 picture.

I don't feel like I'm cheating when I do that conversion.

I haven't tested the postulate, but I think the reason I was unsuccessful on my first attempt to convert with Photoshop is because one must load the Microsoft HEIC and the HEVC extensions.

I was able to finish my project in 4K with the jpeg images converted from heic quite nicely. Was pleasantly surprised that the NVENC encoder for 4K 30p even in two pass highest quality VBR was only about 9 1/2 mins for a 14 min video with lots of fx, scaling and audio envelopes going on. They've definitely sorted that out since VP16 where it created quite buggy renders.

 

I was using my i9 RTX 5000 ada laptop and it was smoking fast at about 50% GPU usage and 7% cpu usage. Interestingly, my Threadripper 1950x Radeon7 desktop doesn't show NVENC as a render option ???

 

Anyway, hoping some day VEGAS PRO gets and update again to natively work with HEIC files. Right now it will do one or two, but any number of them in one timeline causes VP22 194 to gack.

hahaha, well duh, I do have AMD GPU and it was what was terrible in VP16. Will have to try it again in VP22 to see if it's up to the same standard as NVENC on an Nvidia card. Sorry I got those confused.
