Help adding slow motion to an event

I am still new to this software (Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro) and have nearly mastered the basics. I do however, wish to add slow motion to an event that I have copied. The instructions in the help manual are not very accurate and I need help.
It says to hold down CTRL and move one side of the event to the other which should create a zig zag line in the middle of it. I see the zig zag when holding down CTRL but it doesn't put it in the event. The event either moves or does something it's not meant to. Do I have to have a special editing cursor to do this? Can someone help me in plain english please??

I don't get the 'move one side of the event to the other' part. That doesn't make any sense to me. Try this instead:

Hold down the Ctrl key and stretch the end of the event out farther to the right.

Also, if there is another event to the right of the event you are stretching out (creating slow motion), make sure your "ripple" is set or you will end up with a crossfade, which is what I think you mean by "does something it is not supposed to do."
