Help. . . can't print to tape - Win XP issue?

hmag wrote on 1/12/2002, 1:12 AM
I just got my new copy of VV3 to use on my new computer. Man was I excited! Capture worked well . . . using sony DV camcorder and my Fire wire card. Then I tried to do some tests at printing back to tape and Damn! I get frames dropping out all over the place and the blue screen appears in between short bits of video. I noticed that several others are having similar problems and are talking about making sure DMA is enabled. OK there . . .
Others have suggested that I try and mess with the IRQ settings for my firewire card. I don't feel good about messing with the IRQ settings in XP, from what I understand you shouldn't need to do that.

There is a thread over in the Video Foundry forum that seems to be discussing the same issue. I don't believe that it really is a VV problem because I did try it in another program (Ulead Video Studio) and was able to duplicate the results. I have heard that it might be a problem related to the VIA chipset on the Motherboard that I am using or some kind of Win XP issue?

I just got a whole new computer so that I could run this software and it is really depressing to see others having this problem but no one seems to have any solutions. Any other suggestions out there?

Here is my hardware setup. Does anyone have a setup similar to this that is not having a problem?
What am I doing wrong?

I had the same problem under XP.
What I always do (with both VidCap and also during 'Print to tape' is change the priority of the application.
To this...
1. Ctrl-Ald-Del
2. Click on Task Manager
3. Click the Processes Tab
4. Find VidCap.exe or vegas application (not on my PC at the moment to tell you the name) depending on what you are doing.
5. Right Click on it
6. Click on 'Set Priority'
7. Change it to 'High' (Do Not Change It To 'Real Time')
7. Close the Task Manager and away you go.

NOTE: I also do this for Capture although I was not having any problems.

I know this is a pain in the ass however it was the only way I could find that would make the system reliable.

Thanks for the reply. . . I tried that but it didn't work. It is really strange. it just blinks on for aobut 2-3 seconds with smooth video then it blinks off for 2-3 seconds (blue screen). it keeps alternating on and off like that the whole time it is recording to tape. When I view it on the camera afterward it just seems to freeze and get extremely choppy during those period that I was seeing the blue screen during the print to tape.

Make sure you have the latest Via drivers.

Make sure DMA is enabled for all IDE drives.

Make sure the drives are defragged.

Finally, make sure your 1394 card, sound card, and video card have unique IRQs. This can make a huge difference. Search this forum for "IRQ"- the topic has been covered many times.

did everything that was recommended.
- latest Via drivers. . . done

- DMA is enabled for all IDE drives. . . done

- drives are defragged. . . done

- 1394 card, sound card, and video card all have unique IRQs. . . done

I can't figure it out!!! Am I losing my mind? This hardware setup should work right? This is driving me nuts!!! Please someone help me find a solution to this. There has to be a hardware Guru out there with an explanation. I am loving this software but it has no value to me if I can't figure out how to print to tape.

Please list your IRQs here- it still sounds like IRQ crowding. Your system is definitely capable of spitting out DV with no dropped frames.

I'll assume that you have rendered to the NTSC DV template (unmodified)...
