HELP!!!! Capture Problem

I have 80gb hdd, 2 gig proc, 256mb DDR Ram, 64mb AGI, SoundBlaster PCI 512, Belkin 3 port FireWire, Ilink cable, Sony DCR-TRV320 camcorder, Windows ME Operating Sys, and MovieStudio. I have checked all hardware and drivers but when I try to capture it shows as " No Device Detected. I have no other programs on this system. I think it is a software issue with Movie Studio. The cam is recognizing that the firewire is connected. It has a indicator that shows on the view screen that says "DV IN" and when I unplug the firewire the DV IN goes away. What am I missing. I have looked everywhere. Please Help.

Try connecting your cam AFTER you start Movie Studio.

And, if that doesn't work, try connecting your cam BEFORE you start the program.

And, if that doesn't work, your connection may have been stolen by another editing or similar program. Just re-install Movie Studio (which actually starts a repair program). It should snatch it right back.

(Also note that, although technically Movie Studio isn't support for Windows ME, most users find it works fine.)

Do you have reports directly from ME users who are using it successfully? I was going to purchase it when it first came out, but was told by Support that ME was not supported.

I am using a Windows ME system with MovieStudio 3 very successfully. Although my system does not measure up to "always bob" I haven't experienced many problems other than the ones I cause myself. On the rare occasion whem MS3 does not recognize my camcorder I follow the procedure in "grisetti's" post and eventually my camera is recognized although I have never resorted to reloading MS 3. My computer only has a 20gb hard drive so I added (3) 120 gb EZ Quest external firewire drives that works flawlessly. I am relatively new to movie making and just assumed that everything is working the way it's supposed to. Maybe my house is built on a "sacred burial ground" or something. Hope this helps. I havn't tried re-installing yet. That is a good idea. Thanks. I am going to be applying it in about 30 minutes. I will let you know. Thank you I have been fighting this for 3 days solid and I was starting to fear that I was going to lose.

The Screenblast Knowledge Base offers this:

If the Status bar under the Preview window does not display your device when it is correctly connected and turned on, try turning the camera on first and then running Video Capture. If there is no response, try running Video Capture first and then turning on the camcorder. If this doesn't work, from the Options menu, choose Reconnect to Current Device. The detection process may take a moment, but it should not take longer than thirty seconds.

If that doesn't help, maybe we can help you find another way to capture your video -- at least until we get to the root of the problem.

Just to confirm: You don't have any other video editing programs installed, right?

no other vid programs except windows media player. I have tried all of the items you listed still no luck.

This is a well-regarded capture program.

It costs $40 -- but there's a free demo, so at least you can see if it solves your problem.

In my control panel sounds and multi media has a devices tab. In that there is a vid camera. When I try and click on it it says no device installed. Maybe this is unrelated but I thought it worth mentioning.

Another option is Virtual Dub, a free program that, although I've not used for video capture, I do keep because it will convert Type 1 AVIs to Type 2, separate audio from video and some other cool things.

On the other hand, if both these other programs fail, it could be some sort of conflict in your OS.

I'm no expert in that area, but it might be worth looking into that if these software workarounds don't work. Maybe you have a new piece of hardware or a printer fighting over the same port?

And there's this:
If Texas Instruments and Microsoft DV drivers are installed at the same time, you may have problems. Remove the Texas Instruments(TI) drivers. If your camcorder shows up under "Sound, video and game controllers" in the Device Manager, you may not be using the Microsoft camera driver.

And I've also heard of removing the firewire card, plugging it into a different slot and restarting the computer.

Again, this is mysterious country for me, but I'm as eager as you to get this resolved so you can enjoy this great program! Good luck!

This sounds like the symptom described in one of the articles I linked to in my last posting (which, unfortunately, posted way up near the top by your initial posting).

It could well be that you have the TI rather than the Microsoft DV driver installed. If so, the article will guide you through getting the right driver.

Forgive me if this sounds stupid but I had the same problem. My problem was solved when, after clicking on the Capture Video icon in the Media Pool and getting the Video Capture window I went to the menu item Video and clicked on Microsoft DV Camera and VCR so that it was selected then everything worked fine. Hope this helps.

Well I figured it out. I didn't know that my p4 motherboard had a seperate sound card and I had to go into bios and turn it off. Thanks for all of your help. Now though I have to figure out how to stop the dropping
