HELP! Exception error when rendering MPEG-2 in VV3c

Urk wrote on 3/2/2003, 10:41 PM
Hey all,

I've done searches here, but most solutions refer to older VV3 versions.

I have a 2-hour project I need to render to mpeg-2, to eventually write to DVD+R. I get an exception error after 4-9 minutes worth of rendering. Source material is captured from DV using SF's capture applet. The error does not occur at a consistent location in the video. No other active use of the computer while rendering. Error does occur when rendering to other formats, only when rendering to mpeg-2.

Specs:
Iwill XP-333
512mb DDR333
Athlon XP1800+
GeForce 2mx 32mb video card
WinXP home SP-1

Many thanks for any help offered. Here's the error message below.

*bump*

Could really use some help here. I forgot to mention that I've done the uninstall/reinstall song-and-dance. Client is waiting!

Thanks,
Eric

You might try downloading/installing the Vegas 4 demo, which updates the shared MPEG encoder, and then try re-rendering in Vegas 3.0c. This may help, may not, but is worth a shot.

If you still crash, maybe try rendering the program to DV first, then to MPEG-2.

Also: make SURE your machine is not overheating- dual athlons can get really hot and that's been known to cause problems.

Tried the V4 suggestion, no dice.

Tried rendering to DV first, then re-rendering the multiple 3.98GB clips to mpeg-2, no dice.

My machine is a single Athlon, well-cooled, stays around 47-50C when rendering.

Thanks for the suggestions - any more?

Urk - Check out your Windows/Temp directory. See anything there that is old? How massive is the temp directory anyway? If it is huge, lots of files and lots of space, consider what you can flush out of it. I'm not saying this IS the solution, but I have found lately that a good manual "clean-out" works better than me leaving it to WIndows to get rid - yeah? Firstly check out the creation dates of these files! Vewry new ones don't touch, but I had stuff in there over 2 or 3 months old - I'm serious! If in doubt about certain of thes files and folders - yes FOLDERS, I've had a mass of them in there - I've stuck them in a separate "windows/Stuff from TEMP" folder - just in case.

How much space is left on your video/rendering drive? Defrag - I suppose you've done all the usual suspects.

Finally, I've had these "screen" dumps - not necessarily while rendering, and it was in VF - now in V4, but what I've found I need to do is some major manual house-keeping appears to keep me going - sometimes WIndows just gets sloppy - Hey, my to pennies worth - yeah?

Grazie

Hi Grazie,

Thanks for offering the suggestions. The temp folder was pretty clean, and I defrag religiously! Per SF's suggestion, I've uninstalled VV3.0c and deleted the Shared Plug-ins folder, then reinstalled, still no dice. I've dl'ed the Vegas 4.0 demo, still no luck.

Not exactly inspired to pop for Vegas 4.0 if I can't get mpeg-2 rendering up and running! Is this problem truly so rare?

Thanks again for the suggestions,
Eric
