Help for a noob: Video Settings for webcast

Hi there. I am an Acid user who has decided to start doing some video stuff. I have run a podcast for 2+ years (homemadehitshow.com).

I have used Vegas to put the video together ok but I'm having some trouble with rendering. I tested with WMV and got a decent 160mb file for 20mins but I really need an AVI. I tried standard settings and got a 5GIGABYTE file !!!!!!!!! Then I tried DIVX, got a 60mb file but it was blurry during screen capture stuff.

So can you recommend settings for a couple of things.

1. A decent quality file around 160mb that I can post for download
2. A file below 100mb that I can use to post to youtube.

The video is all 720x480 but could be made smaller.

Thanks so much for the help

I've been testing flash player and mp4 export from vegas, and it looks great at about 10mb per minute, 640 x 360 size. If there isn't much panning and it's shot in good light you can get away with even smaller files. And to me this looks almost as good as uncompressed + doesn't look washed out like wmv.

So, 20 minutes at 160mb is definitely doable, unless there's a lot of jumping and running around in the footage.

The downside is people need the latest flash player, while if using .flv everybody is already set. If you have a regular audience already, maybe they could be talked into upgrading, it's not much trouble.

Thanks. I think I might not have made myself that clear.

I am not too worried about the flash, I can handle that, I want to get a good AVI at around 180mb but I have no idea where to start. There is not much movement and I notice podcasts like DLT.TV have a good picture at 150mb for 35 mins.

I just don't know what settings to use.

I think you were clear. I should have read more carefully.

Never use .avi unless exporting uncompressed files for post or import to Sorenson for .flv export, so I can't help you there. I don't even remember what options Vegas has under .avi. I just know to make sure it's uncompressed and uncheck alpha box. :-)
