help, limited number of imported clips?

paul_w wrote on 6/25/2011, 4:06 PM
Guys, need your help.
So i am trying to import a whole bunch of MOV clips, about 40 in total and i can only import the first 25 or so. After that, i cant import any more otherwise vegas either crashes (hangs with no ability to do anything) or the clips preview just as black screens. Never seen this before probably because i dont normally try to import this amount of clips in one go. I eleminated the chance of this being a faulty clip (seen that happen before), all the clips are good and it makes no difference which clips i import, it always hits the limit and hangs Vegas, or clips go blank.
My best guess is this is a memory limitation. But does anyone know how i may get around this so i can continue this project. Or, is it simply a bug. System RAM is showing still with lots free and CPU usage is very low.

thanks
Paul.

Open the Resource Monitor and watch your memory usage as you add MOV files. (Task Manager, Performance, Resource Monitor, Memory)

If your "Used Physical Memory" hits 100%, then your RAM is swapping out to disk. (If your "Commit Charge" ever hits 100%, you will get "low memory" errors).

If you click on the "Working Set" column (to sort it), you can see which processes are using the most memory.

The Quicktime lib for Windows is 32 bit and uses a lot of memory, a bit like injecting liquid cholesterol into your veins.

What are the Quicktime file properties as listed by MediaInfo?

An intermediate render would certainly not be out of the question.

And no, Vegas has no limitation on the number of imported clips.

Steve,
ok did that, and these are the results:

Taking in as many clips as i can just before breaking (28 clips):
Physical memory usage was 2111Mb and free 3163 Mb.

The highest usage is from FileIOSurrogate.exe with just over 1Gig of usage.
Second is Vegas.exe itself with 140Meg of usage.
Commit indicator shows around 15-20%

So i cant see a problem here. Unless FileIO is limited to 1 gig.

The only file type that I know has a limit on the number of timeline files is MPEG program stream. At least that was the case in 8.0. Haven't tested it in 10.0.

You could try rolling back to Quicktime 7.6.2, which was the last version that was compatible with Vegas Pro 8.0. It might just give you more stability with later versions.

QuickTime 7.6.2
QuickTime Alternative 2.9.2 (Decoder only. Less instrusive than Quicktime)
iTunes 8.2.1 (if you must have iTunes too. Comes with QuickTime 7.6.2. Cannot purchase from iTunes store. DO NOT UPDATE IT)

Nick,
You nailed it.
So I just removed the original quicktime, then installed QuicktimeAlt. Works perfectly!

So this is a quicktime error.

Decode only? Anything we should be concerned about? I output to Mpegs or AVC mp4, so cant see a problem.

Thanks guys, its working, all cips loading i can start editing now.

Which version of Vegas are you using? Anything later than Quicktime 7.6.2 is known to cause problems in Vegas 8.0, but I've read posts that say the later versions of Quicktime are OK.

Vegas 10d 64bit. Windows 7 64 bit.

I see this alt version is QT 7.6.2 inside. So that could be it. I was using 7.6.6 i believe.
