HELP! need answer on SVCD prob.

I have rendered a project in VV4 using the SVCD - NTSC defaults and have created an MPG file. I then use Nero 6 to create a SVCD. The finished SVCD plays fine on the pc, but when I try it in 2 different set-top DVD players (pretty new), the picture and sound play jerky, not smooth, like it is having a hard time keeping up with the data. I tried burning the project in 2.33 m/sec as well as 2.5m/sec and it is the same both ways. Any answers, as I am trhing to get this done for a client. Do I need to create the VV4 file in a .avi format and let Nero 6 do the conversion?

Many thanks in advance.
Dave

SVCD is very tricky. Try going just up to 2mbs bitrate. Also, could you audio bitrate be to high?

Also, some players don't support SVCD. I'd check the doc with your player to see if it does. Just to be safe. :)

Whenever I rendered a "SVCD" file in Vegas and burned with Nero 6, Nero would insist on "transcoding" my Vegas file. I would get a re-compression of a compression. I wound up render *.avi in Vegas and let Nero transcode that. Worked fine ever after. Darryl

I use Nero 5 and have never had it transcode. In version 5, you can tell it to ignore slight incompatibilities.

My guess is that you are either playing this on a player that can't play SVCDs, or you have tweaked a setting somehow.

I would try taking a portion of your project, encode it to AVI, and then encode the MPEG is TMPGEnc using their standard NTSC SVCD template. I am quite certain of the compatibility there. Also, make sure that Nero doesn't re-encode.

I have to keep my bitrate at 2400 for my player to play an SVCD. At 2500, I get the same results you describe.

Thanks to all for your inputs! I will try tonight when I get home.

Update: I am still having issues with this SVCD burning issue, and will try some other things this weekend, but I did come across a few tips and will pass on. From Nero support, they said to 1.) try a different media and, 2.) burn at a much slower speed. From a Pinnacle Studio 8 manual, this info was the best info:

"On some DVD players. Most DVD players can handle CD-RW media, but many will not reliably read CD-R. DVD players sold in Europe and North America usually cannot read S-VCD discs; players sold in Asia often can."

I will check this out, but if this is the case, I can buy DVD's a lot cheaper than cd-rw's and will go the DVD route if this is the case.

I hope this will save some else the pain I have gone through to try to get this done. I thought that it would have been an 'easy' task... :)

Many, many DVD players cannot play SVCDs. Some, however, can not only play them, but can play XVCDs (SVCDs done at higher bitrates), and many other non-standard variations.

You absolutely must visit this link:

DVD Player Compatibility

and plug in the name and model of the DVD players with which you are having problems. You will then find out whether these players can play SVCDs, and if so, whether there are some restrictions or limitations.
