Help Needed For New PC Build That Edits Smoothly in 4K

Hello i am planning to build a new PC For video editing and i use Magix Vegas pro 19. i got the Nvidia RTX 3060 and SSD. but i don't know what CPU will work great the Intel Core I9-12900K or AMD Ryzen 9 5900X or 5950x and what ram DDR4 or DDR5.? The Timeline performance The playback ETC. it would be very helpful for me and i am sure for many other people who are also planning to build. My Video Files are from Sony Mirrorless Cameras The Sony AS72 and A6400 8Bit Codec Soon The A7S3 10bit Codec. Besides these cameras i use DJI Mini 2/Dji Pocket 2/ and Go Pro Hero 8 and Iphone 13 Pro Max. Mostly 4K and 1080P H.264 codec and H.265. what's the best setup the would give me no frame drops during best quality playback because i experience this allot on Vegas Pro Even When Editing 1080P. i always have to make proxies. and When i Color grade With Magic Bullet Looks Vegas Pro lags cant even preview a few seconds

You won't get smooth reliable playback of HEVC in Vegas due to it not having a multi-threaded playback engine, it is multi threaded for AVC playback but you will also experience framedrop at times . 12900K with your 3060 and 3600mhz DDR4 with good timings would work great. 12900K may not give better playback over a 12700K, it probably CPU renders faster due to the extra efficiency cores.

A6400 and a7S2 should give smooth playing 4K h264 with any recent processor.

In general Intel decoding is the most compatible in Vegas so I'd suggest 12th generation Intel.

10 bit 60fps HEVC may not play well on any machine at present.

Thanks for your answer and as for the thread he was using that version of Vegas pro on windows 11 which didn't had support for it that time. And that version didn't had good playback.

The IGPU on Intel Core I9 12900K Works very good on Adobe Premiere and Davinci resolve it decodes all the newer codecs 8Bit Codecs are no problem at all and gives a smooth playback on 10bit 4.2.2 24fps HEVC codec it works very well only struggles a bit on 60fps. i wonder if Vegas Pro 19 Utilizes the IGPU the same way as Adobe Premiere or Davinci resolve.

Yes it does, the problem is the playback engine for HEVC. Premiere and Resolve can use all the cores of your CPU, Vegas only 1 or 2 cores. The GPU decoding aids in taking the load off the CPU but playback of HEVC can require more CPU then Vegas is able to access.

We think it's the same for Intel decoding, but there aren't many users here with 11th and 12th generation Intel CPUs who use 10-bit 4:2:2 HEVC who can confirm. If you really aren't happy with the performance in Vegas and don't want to create proxy files, you can always use that CPU with another NLE.

The more data required to be decoded, the more CPU is required, so in the scenario that we're always using GPU decode via IGPU, at a given resolution and frame rate, 420 10 requires more processing, and 422 10bit even more. HEVC 420 8bit at high frame rates and high resolution does not work well for the reason I mentioned: not able to access the full CPU (multi-threading)

A 12900K is good, it has high frequency and IPC

I found a screen capture I made a while ago comparing HEVC playback with Vegas and Premiere. It is a 120fps HEVC 422 being played back(No gpu decoder). The point is not smooth playback, it was to show the available CPU cores used for HEVC decode. Premiere uses all the cores, while Vegas only uses what looks to be 2 cores.

I must say its a beast. I edited 4k H264 and H265 8-bit 420 and 10-Bit 422 Preview quality set to Best Full

after color grading i would set it to Best Half and it plays back without any dropped frames. Timeline performance is great. Rendering is fast. and its able to utilize both The IGPU and RTX 3060 they work together which is what i expected. just for test i also tried editing Red Raw 6k and Blackmagic 6K and it also plays back smoothly without any dropped frames i didn't create any proxies.

and for those who also use Adobe Premiere Pro or After effects at times and DaVinci Resolve for Color Grading it works even smoother and can utilize much more of the system. i hope in the Future Vegas pro updates for windows 11 and the new Alder lake CPU will definitely make things even better then what it is now.

@relaxvideo SO4, the HEVC GPU decoder is primarily single threaded as seen in the video, but legacy HEVC (no GPU decode) is multi threaded, The problems are a few, no GPU decode, less compatible with modern HEVC files, no 10bit support, it will force SO4 decoder while in Legacy mode.

I'd love them to start talking about the HEVC decode situation, because that may mean it's being fixed for VP20, but so far they choose not to comment

i Bought Corsair Obsidian Series 750D Full Tower ATX Case. its old but has lots or storage space which i really needed. I have terabytes of data stored on my HDD Drives and this could fit 6 of them easily along with 3 SSD Drives. During editing it doesn't get loud even in long renders. only time the fans get loud is when i use handbreak to convert videos which utilizes 95 to 100% of the cpu all the time.
