HELP! Project Media refer to Wrong Drive Letter

This is due to that I had a major OS/hard drive problem that took me almost two days to fix whereby I had to swap and test drives in and out.

Once I fixed the system situation, I didn't realize that Windows had changed the Drive Letter path (has always been D:\ for all things video, etc. to G:\ I worked on a couple of projects, then realized the switch, changed G:\ back to D:\ but... now those two projects refer to all the files as being in the root G:\

Replacing each one by one is going to be a major irritating headache for they are in many different folders according to their type -- i.e. Particleillusion PNGs, stock footage, stills, and so on. The pop up file replacement window that appears when opening the .veg still seems to require file by file manual location.

I couldn't find anything in Help to somehow do a batch fix -- or any-way to manually change the path in the Project Media (which while tedious would be far, far less so than having to go line by line and open folders until my head explodes). I'm already drinking too much coffee because of this...

I'm pretty frazzled over this so a step-by-step how-to if available would be most appreciated.

Since both .veg are variations of each other and thus similar, fortunately I was able to find an autosave....veg.bak from a day or so ago that is well enough up to date. I did this after the unpleasant surprise after trying to manually replace one file in one of the .veg, I chose "Recapture All Offline Media" and then - everything -- got grayed out in Project Media thus the project essentially unusable..

I just don't know how to fix this kind of thing. I back up my .veg by hand as needed about every 5-10 minutes so those were useless too.

Thanks, videoITguy, for reply. Got a bit lost in that thread and here is the hard, embarrassing truth:

I was dumb enough to change back the drive path after I started working in Vegas and during it. I know how to change drive paths in Windows Computer Management, have done so many times. I also use the trick of using later-letter drive paths for my backups (X, Y, Z, etc.), but that's not the problem here. And all of my drives are SATA internal.

What I need is some way to go and repair the paths of files -- in Vegas -- without having to do each one of at a time for dozens and dozens of them. As stated in post after your reply, the "Recapture All ..." modality messed things up even more.

I've been pretty stressed overall the last couple of days and rather mistakes-prone in more than just working in Vegas....

It might be a better option for you to simply restore the original drive letter mapping using Windows Computer Management app.

From the Windows Control Panel open the Administrative tools window, then select the Computer Management program. Select Disk Management from the list at left. You'll see something like this. Right-click on the drive you want to re-map, and select Change Drive Letter and Paths ...

Soniclight, one solution is to use Windows Symlinks to have your old Veg's redirect to the new drive for their media.

Gary - Thanks for the response but I did that already -- but as stated, in a very dumb way: while Vegas was open which created the problem. This is not to a new drive, it's the same drive, so changing it back to the wrong G:\ name may fix the problem for a working session but not in the long run. The point is moot now since I lost the original and latest version of the master .veg due to the somewhat serious disk and OS problems I had previous to this. I tried Recuva and found an Autosave, but it was too old to be of any use to me.

The project is done and the master AVI, then mp4 still exist so ultimately not a great loss. I just like having access to fully functional older .veg files so I can duplicate or actually steal out fx chains, settings, keyframes for things.

In short, it's done, gotta move on.

TeeTime -- Also thanks for reply but even though I know how to work in DOS to a limited extent and do stuff like fix registry keys, this suggested application kind of scares me -- one mistake and I could screw up a lot of things. So I'm going to pass on it. As I stated in my reply immediately above, what is done is done, onward and forward.

I just have to pay more attention in the future and not let stress and frustration make me make mistakes (I was still rather freaked out about one drive dying on me (the one with my emergency OS) and then after that, another one -- one of my two backup ones. For the last one it may still be under warrantee, will find out from Seagate by mid-week hopefully.

I should have stated I didn't use the application they reference but instead used mklink in the cmd window. It is no risk afaik and easy to remove if you decide to do so.

You don't get the option to search?? I've had the same problem, and chose the search option, pointing the search at the drive I wanted. After finding the first file, Vegas just informs that the next file is also found, do you want to use it. Check "yes to all".
