HELP!! record meter shows -Inf. WHY

I need to get some recording done ASAP and I don't understand why to the right of the record meter it is showing -Inf. instead of the recording level. All chords are plugged into the right spots but there doesn't seem to be anything going in. Can anyone help me!?

I assume the meter is not responding either ? In Vegas right-click the red 'record' button, and select which input you want to use. Also check (in the taskbar mixer applet for your soundcard, that the appropriate input is enabled.
