Help requested on Upgrade

Hello,
Finally, I’m updating my system to Windows 7, 64 bit, i7 3770, 3.4 ghz processor. Some quick history—I have been using VP 8.0c since Sept. 2007 on an XP Pro system and it has been very stable and served me well (no plans to retire it just yet). Now using a Canon XHA1s for HD video--thus the need for more processing power.

I am 72 years old, retired, and DO NOT film or edit as a business—just personal videos for family and friends, a serious hobby at best. Vega is the only NLE I have used and plan to keep using it.

Since I DO NOT have a need or wish at this time to upgrade to VP10, 11, or 12 given the issues I read about on this forum I am wondering if Vegas 8.0c will run on the new system I mentioned above. However, I am O.K. upgrading to VP9. I understand it is a stable version and should perform well. Any thoughts about if I’m heading in the right direction or maybe about to crash and burn.

I looked on the Sony site for an upgrade path to VP9 but could only find an option for VP12 upgrade. Can I still upgrade to VP9? If so what would be the logical steps to upgrade? I’m taking delivery of my new system next week and would like to minimize downtime and get right to the fun stuff.

FYI, I did spend much of the morning searching previous posts but failed to find conclusive answers. Any ideas or constructive criticism is appreciated.

Thanks,
--Darrell

Vegas Pro 12 is the current upgrade.
You can't "upgrade" to a retired version.
Even if you could, Vegas Pro 9 is for XP and Vista.

You have a thirty day free trial with Vegas Pro, just for you to test before deciding to purchase.
And don't believe everything you read on the internet.
;?)

Thanks "musicvid". Guess since I have purchased the new 64 bit system already it's full speed ahead for VP12 or stay with the old dinosaur XP. Hmmm, guess I will install the trial version and check it out. Thanks again for your reply.

I'm pretty sure you can't "upgrade" to non-current version of VP. You might find someone who has used their copy of VP9 as a basis for their own upgrade, and would be willing to give / sale it to you. Of course, you can't use it to upgrade in the future, but you can always use your copy of 8 for your own upgrade later if you choose to...

That being said. I have 8.0c running on basically the same system you have and it works as well as it always did on my old system -- just faster ;-)

You should have no problems running Sony Vegas Pro v8.x on your new system. After I upgraded my PC to Windows 7, I had Vegas v7, v8, v9 & v11 simultaneously installed and each version works fine ( within the known set of defects for version 11 ).

Have you tried installing v8 on your new PC? Did you have problems? No need to get anything newer if version 8 is not giving you any problems. Vegas version 8 is when Sony introduced support for command extension add-in programs. So this is the earliest version of Vegas I'd keep installed on a PC.

I agree, 8.0c is fine with the HDV that your Canon XHA1 records. It's a very robust version of Vegas and should run fine on Windows 7. If you were working with AVCHD then I would recommend upgrading to a later version. I would avoid the 32-bit version 8.1 and just stick with 32-bit 8.0c running on your 64-bit Windows 7.

Thanks to all for your valuable replies. Since I am not using AVCHD footage I will stay with VP 8 for now, although it's good to know that VP 12 is always an option if needed.
