Help required why Vegas Pro 20 keeps crashing

AmazingM wrote on 12/21/2023, 3:04 AM
With hardly any media on the timeline. Vegas Pro 20 mostly freezes to the "white-out" screen while only open for a max of a couple of minutes each time, sometimes with no media on the timeline. Graphic driver is latest Nvidia But this crash was happening before the driver was updated.... Many of the error report items involve File I/O. With that in mind, could you please upload a screenshot of the File I/O window (Options/Preferences/File I/O (tab), also the Video tab in Options/Preferences, as well as detailed information about your computer including the CPU type/build, RAM, GPU model and please specify the driver build number - plus anything else requested in Point C of https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/

From the error report, you have Vegas Pro 20 build 411 which is the last released build of VP20.

The OPs driver is fine, 460.xx was from a few years back and is outdated. (2080 Super user myself).

MediaInfo doesn't give a hint as to the problem, just 8 bit constant framerate AVC.

My guess is it's a problem with NVDEC and this media. You could try setting hardware decoder to none in file io or turn on legacy AVC decoding and see if it helps. The developers appear to be working on the video engine and GPU support so hopefully reliability will improve for NVIDIA users.

Thanks for your feedback marky-y

Yessss but I use and have always used Game drivers (as I also have racing sim software on this computer). I have never had any issues using game drivers before with Vegas Pro and I have used all versions of Vegas from the very first version by Sonic Foundry. A Studio driver is what I understand to be an older version of a Game driver... is that still true? So, is it then absolutely recommended to only use Studio Nvidia drivers with Vegas? As a matter of interest does AMD have special "studio" video editing drivers for their GPU's??

Thanks RogerS for you feedback too

The crash(s) also happen with other media too ...mmmmm. I will try what you have recommended and see if that works.

Hi j-v I am happy to do that as soon as I get back on my computer which will be tomorrow morning my time. As a note I have never used that check for driver updates in Vegas as I install all latest driver independent of Vegas Pro. I get notified by DDU driver software and always do a clean install of drivers via this great piece of software..

If the version number is the same there is no difference between studio and gaming driver. The studio one is updated less frequently and in theory better tested.

AMD has similar Pro drivers though they've had plenty of bugs.

In that case put file io on defaults and try replacing the media.

I use Shutter Encoder to convert to output format AVC using x264 and then replace the media in VEGAS. You can also do this with multiple files and "swap video files" in the media pool

YUP...Even with previous drivers Vegas Pro 20 crashed. For those with a lot more knowledge than me does the Pro 20 error report (image) that I added at the start of this thread give any clues on what the issue could be?

@AmazingM, on the File I/O tab, try changing the "Hardware decoder to use" to NOT be nVidia.

No it doesn't give a clue to us.

Did you try reencoding the media? That's my best guess as how to get VEGAS to edit well. Try x264 through Shutter Encoder.
