I failed to tell you one thing that happened to me when I first installed V-4.
It jerked in my routine playback until I pushed the new button in the preview
window that contains the selection for right split, left split, or all. After I clicked "All" the preview was smooth. Haven't a clue.

The forthcoming 4.0b update has some tweaks to the audio/video thread interaction that should improve the smoothness of the video on many machines. I can't promise it will fix every problem, but it should improve the situation so we can at least see if there are any other gremlins.

To Sonic Dennis
Using Task Manager, doing some more comparisons between my older m/c that previews with no problems, and my newer faster m/c, on the good m/c the i/o write count in Vegas40.exe increments while running. On the new m/c(with jerky monitor) the i/o write count is frozen.
Can SoFo use this info to help us?

Wow, great to hear SF is doing something on the timeline OHCI ext. monitor preview scene. I like others have tried every trick I could find or think of. Print to DV tape from TL, VidCap and Studio DV all play dv avi files perfect. When I get stuttering/jerky playback while OHCI previewing, the framerate is a constant 29.97. Kinda figured it was Window ME or lack of memory that was my problem. Maybe not.
Didn't you guys (SF) once say that there isn't any buffering when previewing?
FYI, here is an article on a memory problem with Windows XP SP 1. Might be a lead to some of you XP users problems.

The forthcoming update will not magically fix configuration-related problems, but it may improve preview for some of you.

Not to belittle the problem, or add salt to anybody's wounds, but I have been able to get smooth-as-silk previews forever on my plain vanilla Dell PIII 700, Win 2k, 256kram (Rambus), scsi, ide, 1394 drives. Additionally, when I was at Charlie's White Test lab last week I loaded Vegas 4 on his Ibm XP machine, zero tweaks, and external monitor playback of DV was perfect there...PC Nirvana's demo machine at the COW show worked flawlessly...so rest assured smooth preview CAN be done and is done on a routine basis outside of SF engineering. But I know some people can't pull it off to save their lives, including some really skilled system tweakers (one of whom is a cow host)

If you feel like fiddling with your machines, my (working) setup looks like this:

Top slot:

G400
1394
empty
Echo Gina
empty
empty

Video display Bus mastering: OFF
Video display hardware accell: One notch off full
1394 network bridging: OFF

My opinion on all of this is something- video display, usb, network, something...is hogging the bus being used by the 1394 card.

Anyway, good luck- we're keeping a close eye on this.
