Help!!!! Veg Files missing

ex1user wrote on 1/14/2011, 3:28 PM
Help!!! All my veg files are missing after a computer reboot while rendering a major project. I have searched everywhere I can think of.
Will I have to start from scratch after working over 40 hours on this project. Any sugestions ??????

Thankfully all the asset files are there so the drive did not crash - - just the veg files went missing.

TIA

They're not any different from any other files. They'll be where you saved them. Did you create a specific folder for your project and save them there? I not, you should always do this at the start of every project.

If you didn't make a specific folder for them they're probably in your My Documents folder. Check also the recent files list when you pull down the File menu in Vegas. The last few project you've worked on should be listed there.

Did you do a search of your entire hard drive for *.veg files?

Lastly, you are sure you saved them, right?

Yes I saved them. There were 8 diffeerent versions saved as I worked through this edit. They were all accessable until this random reboot.
This project was saved in it's own folder. When I pull down the file menu 3 are showing but when I try to open them it says "unable to open and gives no reason why.

I've used Vegas since Ver. 3 and this is the first time my Veg files have taken a hike. I might understand mayby the last one possbly be gone because of the reboot - but not ALL of them for this project.

A full search does not find them.

I Assume I start all over :(

Thanks for your sugestions.

Are the rest of the files that were in that directory still there or are any others missing too?

Try searching for *.veg.bak files. Whenever you save over an existing .veg file Vegas renames the original to .veg.bak for safe keeping. If you find any, the latest one would probably be of quite a bit of help to you. Rename it to .veg and open it to see what you get.

I have a feeling your hard drive has problems.
Suggest you back up the whole volume to another drive while you still have a chance.

I'm sure the first place you looked was in the recycle bin. Also some folders are hidden by default when you first install but you can unhide them in "folder options". I'm not sure if when you do a search it'll look in the hidden folders.

Strange that ONLY veg files are missing. Can you find any veg files?

also - can you create a new veg file - and where is it stored when you press save?

Sorry I havent checked in. Was out for a time and then had a 2 hr shoot last night.

That said A great HUGE thank you to you and ALL the others that chimed in in helping me. The suggestions made were life savers. Saved 40+ hours of work.

I still do not understand what happened because I have never lost a file before in Vegas.

Thanks again to all

Does that mean you found the missing files ?? Where were they hiding ?

Veg files are still missing but was able to rename the bak file that I last used and got the last veg to show up.

This has been really strange because all the veg file for this particular project dissapeared during a render to test dvd in dvda.
I save the veg then minimise vegas then render out in dvda.

Maybe lesson learned is to save and CLOSE vegas before using dvda.

Also watch out for microsoft:(((

This just happened to me while rendering to DVD file. Vegas crashed about 50% into the render. I didn't worry too much as it's very rare any errors come along. I thought it would be easy to re-open but the veg file was gone! I renamed veg.bak file to just veg which has restored it.

What's the go? surely wouldn't want this to happen again that's for sure.

Talk about a heart attack 3 days of editing almost gone and on a deadline.

If the files are deleted, then maybe you should download some recovery software and try to undelete these files. Deleting is just erasing information about file in the disc file table, but the file content remains on disc until you overwrite it with some other data. So if you didn't overwrite this disc area, it is possible you can recover the files.

I had similar issue, but it concerned Titler pro content. After a crash, *.veg file was present, but Titler Pro animations prepared in Vegas Pro were damaged.
Since then I perform "save as" as often as possible. During 3 days of work I make 20-30 separate saved projects. Thanks to it I can easily undo effects of computer errors or my mistakes.

If your problem is simply a matter of misplacing a file somewhere on your PC, the best file search tool I've found is the free Search Everything utility from Voidtools. It's lightning fast, and has a small presence in your system resources.

Really happy you found the Bak files to get you out of the poo, but this points out once again why you should backup! I have everything for a project in one folder, arranged with separate folders inside for each thing (music, veg files, picture files, live audio, video clips etc etc) This is backed up as soon as it's on my PC to an external drive, using syncback free. It then just backs up changes I make on a schedule set by me. The thought of losing 40hrs work is the stuff from nightmares. :-(

Weird... but glad you didn't have to reedit them again.

Just thinking, time for having backup VEG inside ZIP compression too ?

ex1user, what Windows OS version are you using?

If you play Microsoft CD's backwards, you hear satanic things, but that's nothing, because if you play them forwards, they install Windows.
