Help Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0d

Can someone please help me. I bought a Sony HDR-SR12 for its High Definition. It saves movies in the AVCHD format. It was my fist digital hard drive camera so I was disappointed to find out that each time you stop or start the recording it saves as a separate clip. I soon found out from some research that the only way to combine AVCHD clips was to buy movie editing software. I recently bought Sony’s Movie Studio Platinum 8.0d for two reasons: 1. I felt since it was a Sony product that it would work seamlessly with my camera, and, 2. The box clearly stated that I could “Create Stunning HD Movies”. Now I’m sure this is possible, but I’m having trouble in 2 areas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. When I upload a AVCHD into the program it comes out very choppy on the preview screen in the lower left hand corner of the Sony Vegas program. I thought I could solve this problem by making the “project settings automatically match the media file I was using” and by choosing the “Best” setting for the preview screen. Neither of these solved my problem. The preview screen definitely does not look HD when previewing the video. It is still rather choppy and a little zig zaggy.

2. I can’t figure out how to create a movie and save it as high definition on my desktop. AVCHD is not a choice when I choose create movie. The only options they give me are - AVI, mpeg-1, mpeg-2, Quicktime 7, Realmedia 9, and Windows Media Video V9. Why no AVCHD? I suspect that I may have to choose a different template below, but I’m really confused. Can someone please tell me what settings I have to choose to render in HD. And once I do render in HD, will I be able to view it through Sony’s Picture Motion Browser like I view my clips from my video camera?

It is really frustrating to spend all this money on the video camera and software and still have to jump through hoops to make a coherent video. Thanks for your help!

1. You need to edit in "preview quality" in the preview window, not in "best". If you still can't make it fast, then you need a faster PC. Remember, AVCHD is extremely heavy, much more than HDV.

2. You need to upgrade to Vegas Platinum v9.0a to be able to export in AVCHD 1920x1080. Vegas Platinum 8 can only export up to 1440x1080. If you only bought Vegas recently, I don't understand why you didn't wait for v9.

Someone who is completely new to VMS, who just joined this msg board today, would likely have no idea that version 9 was even on the horizon...

Dorion44: If you just bought VMSP 8 less than 30 days before VMSP 9 was released (Aug 1?), you may be eligible for a free upgrade to VMSP 9.
