AVI files are simply a container - what do you have in them? You can download a copy of GSpot and it will tell you what's actually in the AVI file. Most likely it's MJPEG and your system doesn't have a codec to handle it. If that's the case you might try the Mainconcept MJPEG codec - last I looked (which was some time ago) they had a trial version that would work find for decoding but would put a watermark on anything it encoded - since you're only interested in decoding, it should be fine for you.

Convert AVI Type-1

I have a Canon Power Shot A 620 and have exactly the same problem with the AVI file it creates for movies. Vegas only rocognises the audio track. I have used Virtual Dub to convert it and this does work but a small 30 sec clip of 59mb converts to 1200mb is this acceptable???. The smaller file options in Virtual Dub (Direct Stream) still show only the audio file in vegas.
I have tried the Ulead AVI 1 to AVI 2 convertor but this states that it is not an AVI 1 file.
Any help would be appreciated

I believe the AVI files have MPEG-4 encoding. I used this one for my Canon S2 IS:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm

It's free and works very well with Vegas.

Andy.

I must have picket up an MPEG-4 codec somewhere along the way because I've been able to drag my Canon A80 video into the timeline before without issue.

Hi
Glad you sorted the problem out Donnie. Could you talk me through what you did. I have downloaded the ffshow zip file, extracted it and installed it. I now have three configuration files Audio,VFW and Video.
What do I need to do to the Canon AVI file to make it recognised in Vegas MS.
I downloaded the file and installed it without altering any of its presets.
Thanks
Glynn

Assuming you need MJPEG, run VFW Configuration. While on the Decoder tab, scroll down the list till you find MJPEG. In the decoder column, click on the drop-down list and select "libavcodec". Then click OK.

At least that is how I remember it. Someone posted detailed instructions somewhere in the forum, so if that doesn't do it you should be able to find the instructions by using Search.

I just went to the VFW tab and made sure anything for mpeg-4 was enabled. VMS recognized my files no problem.

Doesn't work for me. Never mind I'll use Virtual Dub - I do end up with a large file but it works OK.
