HELP WITH HDV CAPTURE

maxpower508 wrote on 7/27/2006, 9:19 PM
I just bought a Sony FX1 a few days ago. I was just trying out some of the HDV video by filming various things. Now I am trying to capture the HDV video onto my computer (windows xp) through Vegas Video (made for HDV support and capture) and I am having trouble. I could not find support anywhere so hopefully someone here has an idea.

Here is what happens.

1. I click file, capture video and select "use internal (HDV)"
2. Next I click on "Prefs" and go to "device" and select the 1394 for type.
3. Under that where it asks what type of device nothing is listed and am unable to choose my camera.

Do I Need some software drivers for the FX1? Thank you very much for your time and help!

you might try searching the forums keyword "HDV workflow" in these forums - there are a number of strings on the subject which could help you

1) make sure the camera is on, and in play mode.

2) make sure your firewire port is working on your computer. When you plug the cable in with the camera on you should hear a "ding" and a pop up message in the tasktray saying that new hardware is found and should say "Sony FX-1". to double check this, go to start-control panel-system, click on the hardware tab, then device manager. Under sound, video , game controllers you should see AV/C Tape Device.

At this point, if 1 and 2 above check out, you should be able to go back to vegas and see it under prefs, device tab , device type and device.

Let me know..

Do you have SP2 installed on XP? HDV won't work without it.

Yeah I made sure it is on, but when it is plugged it it says "SOny DV cam", not Fx1 or HDV. What is SP2? and where can i download it? Thank so much for your help!

Well, if it says "sony dv cam" that means win xp is seeing the device, and that was my point of my last post. Okay.. now, as far as SP2, the person that posted that was referring to Service Pack 2 by microsoft. Start internet explorer and click "tools", then "windows update". You should see service pack 2 under critical updates if you dont have it installed yet. Another way to check to see if you have sp2 installed is to go to
"start" then "control panel" then "system" and it should say "winxp sp2" (if sp2 is installed) and also list who xp is registered to as well as how much ram is in your system.

If sp2 is already installed, then and you know you get the "sony dv cam" message when turning on your fx-1 then vegas at this point should see it. Let me know what happens.

PS ... are you SURE your using a Firewire cable and not a USB cable? the usb cable will say sony cam when plugged in as well. you have to be using a 1394 (also know as firewire) cable. the end that goes in your computer should NOT be rectangular. It should be a rectangle with a small V at the end of the rectangle on the end that goes to your computer. A usb cable is a complete rectangle.
le us know...

I actually figured it out....Thanks for your help! Yes of course im using a firewire...I have been editing DV videos fro years but im just starting with HDV. The problem was actually on the FX1, it was set so that HDV downconverts to DV when it is sent through a firewire. So problem fixed. Thanks again for your time and help! Take care!
