Help with Preferences-Audio Editor

OK, I am new to editing and Vegas 9.0. I'm working on a video for a customer, and need to mute a small section where a back-ground man says "OK". I know I'm a little green, and it's kinda a stupid question, but if I can just get the basics down, I'll be able to figure out the more complicated stuff.

Right now, I'm wondering- do I HAVE to get a seperate audio editor, or does one come with Vegas 9? What do I do to remove a sound that's less than a second in length???

Thank you so much,
Cosette

VP is fine as an audio editor for most things.
There are many ways to achieve what you want: some are
- Use Audio Envelope to dip out undesired section.
- Use Mixer Fader Automation to dip out undesired section.
- Split the track at start and end of undesired section & mute.

The first and last are the easiest.
e.g. to Split the track at start and end of undesired section & mute.
just put Play cursor before the words, press S, place cursor after words, press S, then right click on unwanted words and select Switches = Mute from the list.

If it's not on camera and/or lip sync is not an issue, it's real fast and easy to drop a short clip of room tone ( or ambient sound from the same location) over the unwanted utterance.
