Help yet another Newbee

Probably the same question as every newbee but if you could help with your opinions and links, I would be grateful.

SETUP I: I want to do mini DV (camcorder) to PC -> then edit -> then burn to DVD -> distribute to family and friends. I'm a little more then a beginner and plan to go much further but not go to a true (broadcast) professional level. Kind of a step up from home video to planned amateur mini productions, so to speak. All output to DVD, Web and an occasional VHS.

SETUP II: Buying the G3 iMac in Nov. 01 has burned me. If you don't know, Apple makes it real hard to burn DVDs from iMovie output onto drives that don't come from Apple and the Catch22 here is that they don't and won't make an external DVD burner for the G3. Their solution (and reason Apple stops 3rd parties from the iMovie -> DVD encode solution) is for me to buy a new G4 iMac with the internal burner. I'm so angry at Apple that I want to avoid doing business with them ever again, so I'm researching a PC solution, and that's how I came to be here with ya'll today. :)

Questions
1) Anyone doing my thing already and want to pass some experience along?

2) The camcorder/edit/burn DVD path vis-à-vis Vegas Video 3. Can I do it w/ VV3, should I do it w/ VV3, What (exactly) do I need, setup wise, to do it - Hardware and software?

3) Anybody got recommendations as to the PC configuration and/or vendor for the desktop setup?

4) Money - The Apple solution (PowerMac, FinalCut) is about $4000/4500. Gateway has a bundled config (2.4ghz, 256ram) with Pinnacle Studio8 (weak for my needs) for $2000. I would expect to pay about $3000/3300 for a 3ghz PC and editing Software solution from Sonic (VV3, + Sonic add on's, + DVD burner software). Am I thinking correctly about the price in the PC world?

Thanks in advance for tolerating yet another Newbee. All responses are appreciated.

I think your thinking is generally correct on the price points. You certainly can get a good Windows system for $2K (Intel P4 2.4GHz) and then you will have to add on as you mention VV3 + add-ons + DVD authoring. That would bring it up another say $800+.

My setup is similar and I've been happy with the performance and reliability.

Well, I use a 2.0 GHZ P4 PC with a 1gb RAM and two drives totaling 180 GB of storage. I use a Matrox G550 dual monitor card with two 17" monitors. The burner is a Sony 500a for DVD-R and +R. Total Price about $1900 USD. Add Vegas Video 3.0c and Ulead's DVD Workshop and you are set.

Thanks psg and kkolbo. I wonder if either of you (or anyone else) can address the issue of the new Intel processor w/ the Hyper-threading vs. just a fast pentium4 processor? The difference in price is about $800 but I only get one shot to get it right on the processor.

Here are some speed comparisons that might give you some idea:

I thought I saw someone post their render test results with an HT system but I can't find it now.

Here's an article on hyper-threading (the main comparison is to a Mac but it also compares HT to non-HT):

I do exactly what you're describing on my P4 1.8GHz from a Sony TRV900, through Vegas and out to a Pioneer A04 DVD--works perfectly.

I do just what you are looking for on an own built
P4 2.53Ghz
512Mb RD RAM
160Gb (over 2 drives)
XP Pro & 98SE dual boot
VV3.0c
Panasonic LFD-311 (-R/RAM)
Sony DRU-120A (+R/+RW)

The big decision will be over what DVD authoring software to go for

I've got/used
Ulead's DVD Movie Factory
Dazzle's DVD Complete
Sonic solution's DVDit
Pinnacle's DVD Impression Pro

I'm gonna be using the DVD Impression Pro because of it's 5.1 AC-3 support (as soon as SF get Acid Pro 4.0b out with it's 5.1 AC-3 encoder). I've got projects mixed, backing up & waiting to go for audio encode !
