Hi all,
Sorry for the vague system specs, but I thought I'd throw out a problem I'm having with the limited details I have so far to see if anyone has experienced this before.
I've been using Vegas 11 for years with good success supporting my hobby of nature/sports videography. I recently bought a GoPro 6 to film my son's baseball games. I'm recording in 4k 60p, and the gopro saves these files in the h.265 (HEVC) format. I installed the trial version of Vegas Pro 15 Build 361 to handle these files.
I can import them into the Vegas timeline fine, but the preview in the video pane is just gray with a green bar across the top. The audio plays and renders fine. I can render the files, but they come out the same way (gray with the green bar across the top).
I can view the original/source hevc files from the gopro fine using windows media player, and VLC, so it apprears my PC can handle them?
I have a fairly new GPU, but old CPU (don't laugh). My setup works fine for AVC formatted videos, so I was hoping this is just a problem with a codec or something needed for HEVC to display/render correctly.
In summary, the gopro 6 4k HEVC files import into Vegas 15 fine without errors, and render without errors, but the video is just gray (audio is fine). Even the thumbnail preview of the file in the media pane is also gray. I can put a non HEVC on the same timeline and it views/renders fine. The gopro uses HEVC for other resolutions such as 2.7k and 1080p (when recording high frame rates of 120fps and 240fps respectively). I imported clips at these resolutions also with the same gray result, so I don't think it's a resolution issue, but a HEVC issue?
PC high level specs:
OS: Windows 10 64bit
App: Vegas Pro 15 trial (Build 361)
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6
GPU: AMD Radeon RX480 ( I also tried the AMD R9 370 from my son's pc that rendered fine, but I get the same gray preview/renders).
I know my CPU is older and probably doesn't officially support h.265, but since I can view the original source h.265 files directly from the gopro, and import them into Vegas without errors, I'm hoping the gray preview/renders may just be a codec or configuration issue?
After this issue on my PC, I installed the same Vegas Pro 15 trial version on my son's PC (newer intel i7 CPU) and the gopro 6 HEVC files view and render fine.
I'm just trying to gauge if I purchase the upgrade to Vegas Pro 15, am I also going to need a new PC to handle HEVC?
Thanks,
Dan
