Hi8 tape will not rewind after "Print to Tape"

Has anyone else ever had this problem?

I "printed to tape" a 45 min avi file to a Hi8 tape, which was in my Sony DCR-TRW240 camera. (Just a regular, consumer level camera, already three years old).

I cannot rewind that tape on the camera now. Actually, I am worried that I broke something on the camera, because just as I reached for the camera (to push the rewind button), I "shocked" the camera when I touched it.... with static, etc. I put another brand new tape into the camera and printed to tape to it, the same thing happened. I put other tapes in there (other previous Print to Tape projects), and those tapes will rewind fine.

Luckily, I also have a Cannon camcorder, so I am printing the project to MiniDV now.

Everything else on the camera still works, I guess I just can't "Print to Tape" anymore with it!

how can you PTT to an analog camera? My Hi8 doesn't have firewire on it, does yours?

Lol!, maybe it was the DC input instead of Firewire. those firewire jacks seem to fit on both on some occasions.

Anyway,"DVDeviations" have you tried the 'Play+Rewind' option?

Sometimes 8mm cameras wind the tape so tightly that it won't unspool. When we used to repair tapes we would occasionally get in an 8mm or Hi-8 tape that "wouldn't play." We discovered that by winding several turns of tape by hand we could get the tape to play.

You release the tape spools by inserting a small pointy object into the little square hole at the bottom of the cassette (farthest from the tape) and gently depressing the tab inside. It's easiest with two people, one holding the cassette, the other winding.

You might try this with your tapes. Can't hurt.

Hi Jackw,

I tried rewinding the tape as you explained. I can rewind manually like this, so it is good to know, so thanks for the information.

But there is definitely something wrong with the camera, as I am still having problems with the tape. I will just print to tape on my Cannon MiniDV camera now, not the Sony. I think it is finally starting to show some wear and tear.

Glad this was somewhat useful info. Sorry to hear about the camera. Hang in there.
