Hi8 to DV : cam to cam...

Will I notice a huge difference between these two scenari:

-camera to camera using the appropriate wiring (even s-video if the Hi8 cam has an output)

-dumping on my comp' using a video card like ADVC110 or ACEDViO to convert the signal

If there is actually some tests that have been done with comparison pics somewhere on the net, I'd be glad to know about it. Never found anything like this :-/
Thanks!

I remember having seen a huge test of the s-video input quality of different mid-range DV camcorders a while back in a German magazine.
Their conclusion was quite clear: In most cases the video-inputs were really bad. So they generally recommended to use a good capture card and a PC.
But I guess this depends very much on which two camcorders you pair.

Spot did a comparison that was published on-line at Digital Producer Magazine. There are definite differences which is why I bought the ADS Tech A/V Link. It had the closest color reproduction when compared to the original source.

Play the Hi8 tapes out of a D8 deck or camera and then firewire into a DV deck should give superior results. The ADS box is lacking a TBC which the D8 gear does have, also the D8 kit has Dynamic Noise Reduction, you may or may not like what that does but you can turn it off.

Unfortunately, I don't have a D8 deck.
I found a **little** info on the net regarding the ACDViO card and one issue that comes twice is the s-video output that seems to shut down erratically. No good at all.
I'm probably heading towards the ADVC110 box but I'll do a little more research.
Spot compared the ADS Tech box with the Canopus ADVC100. I wonder if the performance offered by the 110 is the same as the 100 (apart that bug they apparently fixed on the 100, hence the arrival of the 110, that was... frying itself out of the blues)
I'd be glad to hear more if you got relevant info or another model of "wonder box" that I don't know of. And thanks for answers so far.
Meanwhile, I'll call the guy to know if he's got firewire on his cam (I would be surprised) . It's probably one of the rare times, if not the only one, I'll have to do it, so...

I've got my own D8 camera and the ADVC 300, plus free use of GYD 800 deck, so I guess I got it easy!
Really depends just how good (or bad) the tapes are, if they're in pristine condition and well shot then just about any A->D converter should be fine.
You can probably pickup D8 cameras very cheaply on eBay, they're fine for playing out 8, Hi8 and D8 tapes plus the A<->D converter in them is very good. Sure not as convenient as the purpose buit converters but if money is tight not a bad option, that's all I had in the early days.
