highlighting part of a still

I have a pic of a map I want to use in a project. I want to do a voice-over and highlight certain areas of the map before using the pan/crop tool to zoom in on that highlighted part. My question is if it's possible in Vegas to do this, or would I have to use another program? By highlight I mean to just shade it, outline or in some other way set it apart.

Thanks for your help.

Combine the cookie-cutter and pan/crop. See my last couple tutorials and #4. The more subtle way is just tweak brightness like I did the the black/white pan of my classmates Tutorial #15, at bottom, play the vid.

If you need a more complex shape than the cookie cutter can offer, use the text generator and choose any symbol from any font you can lay your hands on. Adjust the point size and placement. Pull the opacity of the text to zero and set the background alpha to something like 50. That will "highlight" the part covered by the symbol. You can of course keyframe the effect to make it appear or disappear gradually. Then you can use the pan/crop to zoom in on your highlight.

Followed your instruction up to "background alpha". Help sent me to Properties>Media, but my options for the alpha channel are not numeric. Where do I set background alpha to "something like 50"?
Thanks
