I hate going to the theater to watch a movie. Part of it is the thought of paying an outraegous price for popcorn. Part of it is finding the floors sticky. Yet another part of it is hearing commentary from others as the movie plays (by contrast, I used to love going to the movies on-campus when I was a student in college--the commentary from my peers was as entertaining as the film itself). Finally, with a big-screen TV and surround sound, I can do a reasonable recreation of the movie experience right at home. If I was dating then a movie would be a good idea, since I'm already out of the house. But I'm not.

There might be another factor these days. For those folks who voted red, their relationship with some screen star might forever be jaded based on the fact that the star and the viewer have entirely opposite points of view on some of the issues of the day. For example, I used to like Alec Baldwin; now, when I see him in "The Hunt for Red October" I have a hard time picturing him as a hero. To each his own, I guess (sigh).

I almost feel unclean echoing any sentiment expressed by the academy awards, but Million dollar baby is a good--possibly great--film. Got to see it again to decide. But I was around all those years when Eastwood was doing the spaghetti westerns and all the artsy types were slagging him bad: dumb, macho, testosterone-soaked neanderthal, etc, etc. Now the "arts community" thinks he's all wonderful.

And while Ray wasn't all that good a movie, its heart was in the right place, and I can't argue with hearing all those tunes and sort of seeing Ray do them.

I liked the spaghetti westerns ... would be Great to see Eastwood in a Quentin Tarantino Kill Bill 3 sequel, say as Bill's brother coming back for revenge... (and Quentin if you're out there, gimme a bit part, ok? your movies are great)

So here's my take - movies are movies. Kids will go to them whenever they want, because they are fun (even if they're not good).

If Hollywierd wanted to make more money they would start producing more G rated films - as they with almost no exception rake in more money than any other movie rating in a $$$ to # of films made. (Giant customer base - and kids can drag their parents to movies so well) This may be in part to the fact that they produce so few.

As for the lack of good movies made lately - that's kinda hard to say, as many "classic" films weren't "classics" until later. I agree with, however, the statements made about how "it's happening right now" - Their are movies of our time that will be viewd as Greats by some, But in the end it's a matter of perspective. A perfect example of this is my wife - she has some very VERY strange "classics" that have been dubbed the Crappix due to the crappy nature of the movies, stories (or lack there of in many cases), etc...

Now, as for Reality T.V. I have very VERY little use for some of the shows, and a GREAT APPRECIATION and love for others - depends on the shows. I have very little use for things like Fear Factor (though sometimes I'll TIVO it and watch the last stunt or something), But DON'T TAKE AWAY MY EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER!!!! If for nothing else than the nature of the show. If that were the only good Reality Show that's out there (and it may be). I'll happily take it with the bad because it never would have happened without Reality T.V.

Anyway - I could blabber on about this and that, but I'm done for now.

"With so much illegal traffic, it's no surprise that a clampdown has started: In November, the Motion Picture Association of America began suing downloaders of movies, in order to, as the MPAA's antipiracy chief John Malcolm put it, "avoid the fate of the music industry."

ROTFL

That's a snipit from the bit torrent article if no-one here had read it.

"...the fate of the music industry"

Here's an article which explains how clueless the music industry is:
