Horizontal fold on screen when rendering

Hi,

As a new Vegas user I have already gleaned a huge amount by reading posts here and now have a problem I haven't seen covered, hoping for assistance!

I have an xvid .avi file which I am using as source material, and after editing I'm encoding to a 3mb/sec .wmv format file. Importing and editing the .avi is fine, but when I render it I'm getting a very thin horizontal line exactly half way down the screen and across the whole width. It is there in the preview window during rendering and also on the finished file. However it is not constant, it comes and goes during the render and can be at different times into the video on different rendering attempts.

The image above and below the fold are slightly shifted horizontally.

I am setting the project properties from the source file so there is no change in frame size, etc. I have altered the xvid .avi source file as follows to get it into Vegas: I have used virtualdub to process the audio to LCPM and have used aviC to change the header to divx.

I can render to uncompressed or compressed .avi files without the fold showing up, but when rendering to .wmv (which I find gives the best result from this source file, even better than uncompressed which I don't understand) the line occurs. Choosing 1mb/sec cures the line but gives reduced quality.

Any suggestions as to what is causing this?

Thanks,
Dave
