Horizontal lines in rendered mpeg2

I just rendered a 4 minute movie in mpeg2 format and when, I played it back in Windows Media Player, it had horizontal band lines running through each scene distorting the picture. This has never happened before. The video consists of silent clips captured from Hi8 and scanned photographs. There is also a music track.
Does anyone know what could be causing this problem?

sounds like you had field rendering turned on. if you are only playing back on a pc, then set it to progressive.

Thanks Craig, switching to progressive fixed the problem

I do have a follow-up question, though. If I wanted an mpeg2 file that could be viewed on both a PC and a standard interlaced television, how should it be rendered?
(I thought that mpeg2 files could be played on many newer DVD players.)

Thanks again for your help.
