Horizontal Lines problem

Ace Fortune wrote on 7/13/2006, 12:24 PM
Hi! Whenever I render horizontal lines appear in the video on the object that is moving. Even the slightest movement will cause the lines to appear. It looks like a field order problem, but in the properties window it is set to "lower field first". The horizontal lines are not there before I render. I use Vegas 4.0. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

Thanks in advance!

Is this an SD or an HD project? In the project properties, what did you set for "deinterlace method"? If you set it for "none", that's the problem. This setting doesn't necessarily mean the output will be rendered progressive.

Are these fat lines? Not the size of individual scan lines but much wider? I've posted on this calling it "window blinds"/

I tried a lot of stuff. For a while I could reproduce it, then it went away and I couldn't. Never did figure out what it was.

On a computer monitor you won't be able to spot field order problems, since both fields are displayed simultaneously (sp?) / both at once. On an external CRT, you'll be able to see which field is being displayed first.

2- The interlacing lines (of the 1-pixel kind) is perfectly normal. When your footage is displayed on a television, it will look correct. LCD TVs will de-interlace the signal, so it'll look ok on LCDs too.

If your footage is destined for display on a progressive device, then the lines are a bad thing. In that case you want to de-interlace. If it's web output, set vegas' de-interlace mode to interpolate, and output at half resolution or lower.

The better quality method:

Ace Fortune - I had basically the same problem (it sounds like it anyway) recently. To clarify my post a bit, you can read about when I had an issue like this.

Thanks for the help everybody!!

Jayster- It's a SD project. I had it set to "none". What should it be set to. I want this project to stay 60i. I also want the best quality possible. Thanks again for the help!!!!!!

You shouldn't have to do anything, as long as you're exporting to a 60i format. 60i should be the default for NTSC DV... so you don't have to do anything.

You might benefit from watching on an external monitor so you don't have any surprises.

The project I had this issue on had project settings of HDV with mixed footage (HDV and SD) and was being downconverted to SD. Changing the setting for "deinterlace method" from "None" to something else made the problem go away entirely. I was still rendering to an interlaced format.

Try this: create a region in your project (or just make a selection on the timeline). From the "Render As" dialog set for "region only" with deinterlace method set to "Blend fields," using the same template that you've been rendering with (i.e. interlaced NTSC DV or MPG2 or whatever). Don't change anything to progressive.

Once you've rendered it, put the rendered clip on a timeline and play it back from Vegas, being sure to "Preview with external monitor" using a television connected via Firewire through the A/D converter.

Worst case, if you don't have a television hooked up for previews, I suppose you could burn a DVD (using an erasable disc so you don't waste it).

Give it a shot. Shouldn't take much time.
