hot audio on iMac

I have used Vegas for years, and recently moved to a Mac - so now I am running it via BootCamp on iMac hardware. The OS is XP SP2. For some reason, all of the audio is really loud and distorted. The sounds play back fine on the OSX side. Might this be a driver issue? Has anyone else had a similar difficulty?

I am using a similar setup, however I have installed Vista Ultimate. Of course you have tried the Windows Soundmixer to bring down the output?

I have to drag the slider nearly to the bottom, but it still doesn't sound right.
