How are people using Input Monitoring while recording?

I've been messing with ASIO and input monitoring and I would be interested in hearing how others are using this. The gist of my question centers on the fact that non-in-place plug-ins cause stuttering (i.e. you need to use SF Track optimzied plugins for example).
I was wondering how people worked around this or what their work flow was.
Thanks for the tips/advise in advance!

I mainly use the live input monitoring feature while tracking through my guitar amp sims, like iZotope's Trash or the UAD-1's Nigel. I just make sure my Delta's DMA buffer is set at 5msec or less( any more and you will hear a perceivable delay), then configure and refresh Vegas in the Advanced Audio options to reflect the new latency. Enable Input Monitoring on the designated audio track and then start playing. Remember, when recording and using input monitoring, the effect is not printed to your to your track. The recorded track will play through the plugin during playback. It is all non-destructive, until you want otherwise. In my experience, using proven low latency drivers and a W2K/XP OS, goes a long way to ensuring a stable low latency environment. BTW, using the input monitoring in Vegas with the above DX plugins at 5msec or less latencies, is no different in response, than say, playing my Les Paul or Precision Bass through my external Line 6 POD 2.3. The only time I will get stuttering or dropouts, is when I am pushing my CPU past 95%.

It's useless for vocals (very unnatural sounding) but useful if playing guitar as you said, and with bass even dry (the thickening effect that makes vocals sound unnatural actually works when tracking bass).

I don't use Vegas for input monitoring. I have a Aardvark direct pro and I use the software that came with it for monitoring audibly. I do use Vegas for a visual reference of the input signal, it's more accurate.

Hopefully some year soon they will implement auto input, so we can use a familiar style of recording

Until they implement auto input monitoring, I have absolutely no use for the monitoring available in the current version of Vegas. I see no advantages as I can use my analog mixer and outboard gear for zero-latency monitoring with effects.

I don't use it (use analogue console), but did verify that it works. Thought is sounded a little 'phasey'.
