How can avchd be 640 by 480?

I captured some footage to my computer and it shows as AVCHD on the hard drive where it's saved. If I click properties, however, it shows 640 x 480?

AVCHD is hdef right? So then why isn't it 1480 by 1040?

When loaded on the timeline, it does not fill the window but has black edges on all sides.

I took a screen shot of it and it saves it as jpg which as I understand is lower quality?

I plan to make it fit the screen preview so there are no black edges.

I am guess the resolution will not be good when viewed?

AVC is a video compression form of the H.264 codec. The Mp4 it creates can be whatever resolution you select, from 640x480 to 4k or larger.

Or are you saying that this is video directly from your camcorder? If so, many camcorders can also be set up to record at a number of resolutions. If you want your video to be 1920x1080, you'll need to set your camcorder up to shoot 1920x1080.

I guess you are saying there are two ways to set it to the 640 x 480. I did not do it once it was on the computer as far as I know and I guess I must have screwed up w the camera settings as everything else I shot in 1440 x 1080.

I was just surprised to see that I had screwed up as I was very careful about the settings but I am just learning so I prob just did something wrong.

Good thing it was only a little bit of footage.

Thanks.
