thanks in advance for even reading this post !! :)

is there a way to record from my 16 chan. mackie into my pc by chan. independently.

exp. chan 1 has bass guitar; chan 2 has keyboard; chan 3 has vocals,

with out having to record them one at a time?

my thoughts are i may have to get some type of component or some type of interface that i would run from the inserts of the mackie to it, then into the sound card(s).

and again your help is greatly appreciated.

You need a multiple input soundcard. There a several on the market that have up to 8 inputs and outputs. You'd have to use two of these to be able to record 16 channels at once ... I've never done that though so I'm not sure what to expect.

Yes you need 2 soundcards (ie; 2 Echo Layla's) and your computer needs to be powerful enough to record 16 channels at once. If you're using a Mackie 1604vlz for example, you can route channels 1-8 direct outs, and 9-16 from either the inserts and/or a combination of inserts and busses into the cards any way you like.

Just curious, but are there any good mixers out there that have something like a USB-2 or firewire port for direct connection to the computer? Such a mixer would have to have digitizers for each channel and then mux these together to send to the computer, and then have software to demux them into separate inputs for Vegas. I'm sure something like this must exist, right?

There are digital mixers out there that connect via firewire. It's a huge market right now, and I'm even buying one myself (and maybe a built in HD recorder) sometime in the near future. Roland, Fostex, Digidesign, and oh, a thousand other companies make some great hardware right now. Check out the web for gear sites and you'll be overwhelmed by the variety of styles, sizes, and price. It all depends on what you want to do, how you want to do it, and how much you are willing to spend.
