My guess is that it's a DivX or Xvid file. You'll need the proper codec for it. They should be freely downloadable.

not a divx or xvid file -- it is most likely SkyStream’s MPEG-4 , though there is Smpeg for linux ..

you might be able to convert it in virtualdub to something else ..

Maybe you can use Windows Movie Maker - it might be able to play it and then write it out as something Vegas can read .... Maybe it can play the file since WMP can.

S-Mpeg4 V2 refers to the second of a series of three Mpeg4 codecs Microsoft issued as development versions before they decided to roll it into what became WMV and not issue their final Mpeg4 codec for use with .avi files after all. Microsoft did say that these codecs were for development use only and not to be used for production purposes but of course no-one took any notice so there used to be quite a lot of files around encoded with one or other of these codecs. (As a side note, the original DiVX ;-) codec was a hacked version of Microsoft's S-Mpeg4 V3 codec.) The audio in these files is usually MP3 which Vegas can handle OK of course.

Anyway, to get Vegas to handle the video from this file you will need to install the codec for S-Mpeg4 V2. Easiest way is probably just to download and install the combination codec that handles V1, V2 and V3 which you can download from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Microsoft_MPEG-4_V1_2_3_VKI_Codec.htm
