NewBlueFX plugins appear mixed in with all of Vegas Pro's native FX in the Video FX window. If you select the 'Third Party' tab in the Video FX window, you should see any 3rd party FX like the NBFX plugins there.

BorisFX Particle Illusion Standalone is by its very name a standalone product - it does not appear as an FX in any NLE including Vegas Pro. The idea with the SAL version is to create the effects within the SAL, render it out and then import the render into Vegas Pro. The difficulty arises that the background video cannot be imported into Particle Illusion SAL in order to design the particle effects. It may have been on BorisFX's forum ( https://forum.borisfx.com/ ), but I seem to recall that someone managed somehow to get a still image to be imported into the SAL version.

To get Particle Illusion as an FX plugin within Vegas Pro, you would have to buy the Particle Illusion OFX version from BorisFX.

If, for some reason, after installing an effects package they really do not appear, the solution is to clear the VEGAS cache. Then the cache will have to be rebuilt and it will locate the new plugins then.

steve-quinney wrote on 7/18/2021, 7:49 AM

Hi, and thanks for your help. Unfortunately after clearing the cache (which I hope I did properly) the Elements is still not appearing in Vegas Pro 18. Sorry to be so dumb, but I'm obviously doing something wrongly, or am missing out a stage in setting things up. Any ideas as to what to do next? Thanks. Forgot to mention, I closed down Vegas before clearing the cache then re=loaded Vegas. Still no joy.

@steve-quinney  ... you haven't said whether or not you've selected the 'Third Party' tab on Vegas Pro 18's Video FX window. If it is populated then that is likely your NBFX plugins. If it is empty then there is a problem.

Hi Dexcon, and thanks for your reply. I had selected the "third party" tab, and all that appears is the "default" P-I-P effect. Nothing else I'm afraid. That's not the Newblue Overlay 3 effect is it?

Dexcon wrote on 7/18/2021, 9:04 AM

That does not look like NBFX Overlay 3 at all. A possible approach would be to reset VP18 as per item 14 in https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-faqs-and-troubleshooting-guides--104787/ .. and check the clear cache checkbox when that option appears.

Just to make sure, was NBFX Overlay 3 installed after Vegas Pro was installed? This used to be an issue for non-appearance of VFX in Vegas Pro years ago but not so much these days.

Hello again.

Been in touch with NewBlue support and they explained that the effects would not be identified as NewBlue or NB. They listed the effects, and they are there, so my apologies for troubling you and your help was much appreciated. Best regards, Steve.

Yeah, it's easy to overlook the NewBlue Elements 3 Overlay plug-ins since there's only like five of 'em. However, they are very powerful and I absolutely love the image-map effect where you can create an ADO-like DVE-plane of motion-video anywhere in 3D-space:

For 3D-space you don't need a plugin, can be done in 3D track motion of Vegas (but is not easy to understand)

3POINT wrote on 7/19/2021, 3:08 AM

I just viewed the demo of the possibilities of NB Elements 3 Overlay. I didn't see anything that not can be achieved when using the Vegas internal FX tools, like Cookie Cutter, Bezier Masking, PIP, Mesh Warp, Pan/crop and (3D)Track Motion.

Reyfox wrote on 7/19/2021, 5:47 AM

I think there more than 5 of them..... but I've complained about how VP18 changed the folder structure when you view from the tab selections. I hate it. With VP17, everything was in it's proper folder. You want NBFX Elements? Easy. Click on folder and they all appear in that folder. Easy. Now in VP18? You have to know the name of the particular effect/transition/Media Generator you want. At least Boris FX, Sapphire and Ignite have their names in it, but everything is still alphabetized instead of being in it's proper folder.

I had wondered why VP18 was made to look similar to VMS instead of how it has looked in the many years past...

Never saw such an impressive third party plugin list, must have cost a lot of money. I personally like the new FX folder structure. I made the few plugins I often use, my favorites, quite easy to find than what you need. I also often use the plugin chooser to choose from because it gives also access to Filter packages which i cannot access through the FX tab

Dexcon wrote on 7/19/2021, 7:10 AM

I'm going to go middle ground here. I like much of the VP18 FX layout - the tabs and the Favorites option - but I also like the 'All' display as per VP17 where you can easily see the FX which was also broken down into 3rd party folders. I think that the latter is one of the requests that appeared a while back in the Vegas Pro 19 Feature Requests post under Off Topic. So here's hoping that the best of both world's comes with VP19.

@3POINT that "impressive third party list" happened over a few years and waiting for sales, usually around Black Friday. Boris FX offered me Continuum 2021 at a price I could not pass up. Ignite Pro 4.1 update to 5, Humble Bundle to the rescue. NBFX from previous VP builds. Same with Sapphire. I average out the cost of buying over a year and then make the decision. You would be surprised how much I paid for the Mercalli Suite for two computers. If I had to pay the "retail" price, I would not have it. Same with any of the other plugins.

I do like the Favorites, and the other top tab breakdowns a little, but there should have been an option or meld of both of them. VP19 is around the corner..... hoping.... 😉

You can see Elements Overlay here: https://newbluefx.com/products/elements/overlay/

It contains: Flying Picture-In-Picture, Image Mapper, Picture Grid, Picture In Picture, Picture In Shape, Split Screen

Looks specifically for those names on the VideoFX tab.

steve-quinney wrote on 7/19/2021, 8:04 AM

Thanks jetdv, I can confirm they are there in the videoFX tab.

Being relatively inexperienced on the video side of Vegas and VP18 being the 1st time I installed 3rd party video plugins, the later of what you described is kind of how I organized my video plugins.

I used the Plug-in manager window to categorize them by developer sub folders in the plugin manager window. Started by putting all the Vegas included plugins in their own "Vegas" sub folders. Then immediately after installing a 3rd party plugin bundle I would create a sub folder by their developer name in the plugin manager as well. I found the 1st time I attempted to setup Vegas with 3rd party Video plugins, they were all grouped together and I was having a difficult time trying to distinguish the differences between the different developer plugin bundles I purchased. It was kind of like, "well I just installed this bundle, unsure what everything is included to be able to make sure everything was there." I had to restore my system to an image prior to installing 3rd party plugins, so decided to do a little preemptive manual organization the 2nd time around in the plugin manager window.

I'm not quite up to speed on using the "Video FX", "Transitions", and "Media Generator" tabs at this time, although they do look pretty cool with the previews and all. Just kind of followed the method I was used to from organizing audio plugins in Vegas. We never got an "Audio FX", "Reverbs", "EQs" and "Dynamics" tabs on the audio side of Vegas. 😄
