How do I bring back my saved projects?

I have a couple of saved projects (local) and the project files are on an external drive. I detached the external drive and then re-attached it and the letter Windows associated with the drive is now different, like 'I' instead of 'F'. I get a message when I launch Vegas that it cannot retrieve the projects---the error message is " *.veg could not be opened" and then the project files disappear from 'recent projects'.. That does not make sense because it should find the Vegas project file and then I can just point to the drive that has all the work files and let it re-associate. I cannot open the files anymore. Are they gone? Also, I located the project files and opened them with Vegas and it crashes 100% of the time. It seems either way, I can't bring my projects back anymore.

Generally my workflow is to restrict projects to their own drives, usually SSD. I tell clients to provide their own SSD for storage and development. Though professionals tend to keep work files for themselves as clients are paying for the work, not work files. However, while working on a project, I store the work files respected drives to keep things organized and less cluttered. When working multiple projects, swapping drives is commonplace between different machines where Vegas is installed. Maybe if an SSD is sitting in a dock for a longer while then you connect it to another, it throws things off, which may have been what happened here, I am not sure. But then it should be a matter of telling the program where to look and not have to endure several crashes to get to that point.
