How do I cut a section out from a clip in a timeline??

Once again,..I'm stumped! I'm making some great strides with Vegas and love the J,K,L keys for scrubbing, but I have again hit a roadblock that is making me scratch my head. How in the name of Pete can I cut out extra footage from within the timeline?! I selected the edit selection tool and draw/drag a rectangle around the section that I'd like to address, but when I release the mouse, nothing is highlighted and nothing is selected. I mean really,..in Premiere I select the scissors tool and click on a part of the clip on the timeline that I want to separate from the rest of the clip and walaah it's done. I can then select he newly sliced/separated clip and delete it without delteing the entire video clip from the timeline layer. When I select the scissors tool in VV, and then touch a portion on the clip, the whole clip goes "bye bye"! I'm probably not making any sense here, but I guess it's like this.

In Premiere, I would have a video clip on the timeline. I decided late that I wanted some footage in the middle of the clip to be removed. I select the razor blade tool and click on a beginning point and then click again on the end point of that unwanted section. Now it is freed (independent) from the rest of the clip so that I can select it and delete just that portion. If I choose to leave it in,..it will stay where it was and have no effect on the end result. (meaning there will not be a delay from the cut points but the clip will just be indepemdemt so that it can be edited separately from the rest of the clip etc.)

Would appreciate any help on how I would do this in Vegas. I followed the online help, but again,..it has no effect on the section that I draw the rectangle around.

Place the cursor at the point in the clip where the undesired footage starts. Hit the 'S' key to split the event. Repeat for the end of the footage you want to remove. Select the portion to be removed, and hit delete.

You can split both beginning and end points at once if you use the time selection cursor and highlight the portion of the clip.

Hope that helps?

Use the 's' key to split (or razor) at the points you require. Select the portion that you wish to remove & press delete.

yesh it is a bit tricky if you are used to premiere. But what I do is just hit the "s" key - you put the cursor where you want the cut and than hit the "s" key and it will splt the highlighted event at that point. Just go to the next/out point in the take you want to cut and hit the "s" key again. Now thake that middle section and do what you want with it. Be careful though - if you want to remove it and hit delete you may find you still have the audio left over. Another VV quirk is how is handles locked audio/video after a split.

You guys are the best! Thanks so much for taking some of the pain away at 12:30AM!!! I'm really trying to make Vegas work for me and I think it is going to be a winner. I'm writing all of this down too!!! I'm not overjoyed with the different ways VV handles things, but that's just because I'm a newbie with it. I think the stability and quality speaks volumes for this app!!! Also...let's not forget the great folks on this forum!

Thanks again!

Sometimes it seems that Vegas performs functions in such a stright forward and easy manner that it's hard to figure out how to do something. When you are use to and looking for a complicated way to do something, the simple and easy is not always so obivous. Just keep asking, and you will know and appriciate. Glad to have you in Vegas Land. Wobbly Boy
