@Ruby888 do you want it to go away? You clicked + held the left mouse button down & dragged, off the media on the timeline or below the tracks to create that,

Put the cursor on the blue line, right click will give you options, double click on the media in your timeline will set that blue region to the length of the project or to a separate piece/event

You mean the selection area? Just drag the two ends together. Or go to Options - Preferences - Editing and check "Collapse Loop Region". Then when you click anywhere on the timeline, that loop region will disappear.

Thank you both.

Just one last question. I never use that feature, what is it used for?

Former user wrote on 12/11/2021, 7:12 PM

@Ruby888 I use it to 'Loop' play that selected area, if i've just 1 event i want to play over & over while i'm adjusting it i double click on that event, it then sets it to that events length,

if you just want to play a selected area like a transition, you can click/hold & drag below the transition to select the crossfade,

I 'Set Selection to Project', in the blue bar at the top, that stops the timebar running off when it gets to the end when playing,

There's an option at the bottom i don't use to cut that area, or press delete removes whats in the blue area.

or at the bottom also there's 'Insert region' between the 2 blue line markers, the first is 1, if you then later want to go back to that area, click 1 on the keyboard, you ca create many regions, 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. to remove that region marker, right click on the marker - delete.

If you put the cursor on the blue bar at the top you can 'Zoom to selection',

When you render out, you can choose just to render that selected blue area,

Yeah, right . .

The proper, Creative SOLUTION, would be to have an option to MAKE a LOOP Region or NOT make a LOOP Region on the Timeline Toolbar, Toolbar, and a shortcut Keyboard KeyStroke. This is SUCH an excellent Creative Tool that it needs to be FRONT and CENTRE. Not buried within Preferences! Maddening...

jetdv wrote on 12/12/2021, 7:08 AM

@Ruby888, it can be used for many purposes. I also do as @Former user does and use it to create an area that just loops on the timeline so I can make an adjustment (usually to audio where I need to hear it play over and over to get the sound the way I want it). If something is out of sync, it's an easy way to keep it going to get it back into sync.

You can also use it to "measure" a distance on the timeline. In the lower right-hand corner are three boxes of timecodes. These are the left side of the selection area, the right side of the selection area, and the distance between them. So if you have a blank spot on the timeline and you want to know how much time it takes to fill that spot, creating a selection area can tell you that.

When rendering, there is also an option to render only the selection area. So if you wanted to render out a smaller portion of the timeline, creating a selection area will let you do that.

Open the help file and search for selection area for more details.

Former user wrote on 12/12/2021, 7:57 AM

@Ruby888 I think @Grazie is saying he does like it but the settings @jetdv suggested should be on the screen, maybe an icon on the toolbar at the bottom not hidden away in Preferences, & keyboard shortcuts available for it also,

I personally leave it on in preferences, i use it all the time. once you get used to using it it's like @Grazie says it's an 'excellent Creative Tool' 👍

Former user wrote on 12/12/2021, 8:12 AM

@Ruby888 & I forgot, when you select an area, you can 'Build Dynamic Ram or Selectively Prerender' just that selection so it plays better on screen, Dynamic Ram & Selectively Prerender doesn't alter the orig files, they're only temporary, they're just a way to make Vegas play better in tricky areas where there's added fx's or transitions etc. as soon as you make an adjustment to that fx or transition on the timeline, the temp Prerendered file or/& the Dynamic ram that is saved on the Ram sticks becomes obsolete & will have to be done again,

& if you double click on the timeline but off the track events, it will select the whole project

Yes I use it from time to time, but its rare, you can still use it, using the lower play pause stop etc. I just don't need it very often. If I rarely use it, in preferences, when I click on disable loop you can still use it.

I really appreciete everyone advice but I not an expert, that's why I posted it here, what is this tool called?

Grazie wrote on 12/12/2021, 11:49 AM

You mean you don't like it?

@Ruby888 - I like BOTH options, but I want them more available not buried, deep, within a Preference list. It’s counter to creative workflow. And THEN to do the same Tango to change it back. This is a personal issue with me. I want it readily available.

Have you ever used it?

@Ruby888 - Sure, once or twice, over the last twenty years of using VegasPro - 😉. And, just for the record, I try to only comment on something I’ve used and tried.

jetdv wrote on 12/12/2021, 12:38 PM

@Ruby888, I leave that option turned off. When I click on the timeline, I want it to collapse. I can make them as needed with the option turned off so there's no need for me to ever turn it on. Just click and drag or double-click to create one and I'm done. Click somewhere else and it disappears. That's the way I like it.

It's called a selection area.

@jetdv - Yes, yes it does, and in that time I’ve lost both focus on my Narrative and Cursor position.

It's called a selection area.

@jetdv - Yes, that’s what it’s called. It’s called a selection area.

Is there a way to stop regions from being created inadvertently? It seems like a region is often created when I click on the timeline to move the cursor. I'd like to completely disable regions. Is it possible or not? Thanks.

That's a new question, you should start your own thread. Inadvertently creating regions while moving/dragging cursor can be disabled by enabling following setting in preferences.
