how do I gather subclips from lots of videos?

I want to create a video which includes small samples from lots of my old home movies. I'm not sure the best way to do this. I imagine I can go to each video and select sections and render them out to a folder, then pull those into my master video.

But is there a way to do this without actually rendering them out (i.e. just saving the source and "clip" information)?

You can create virtual subclips of your favorite scenes (no rendering) using the subclips button the trimmer window. To use make your selection in the trimmer window and then click the subclip button and it will prompt you to name the file.

Hope that helps, Marc

Or Regions. - g

I'm a little confused. I have Vegas open (Pro, version 9) and I opened the trimmer, selected a few different segments (regions?) using "[" and "]" and clicked on the "Create subclip" button each time. Sure enough, it asks for a name, and it places a representative icon in the "Project Media" tab.

However, I don't see any actual file in that folder on my drive. How do I switch to my master project and load these clips in?

Basically, I'm trying to create a combination video/slideshow for my wife's birthday, from the 80s until today.

G, you mentioned regions. How would I do that? Again, I need to look in several videos, capture portions somehow, and load them into my master video.

In fact, I'd like to load them in a bin of some type in my main project so I can pick and choose.

Thanks again!

Oh, I think I see what you mean! Open the movies, one at a time, in my major project, and capture the clips there? That way, they'll be in the project media?

That makes sense!

Since you want to avoid rendering you will not see them in a physical folder because they virtual subclips. You would have to render them out if you want to have them appear in a seperate folder. Why not make the subclips in your master project and organize them in folders in the project media window? I don't think you can import subclips into another project because they are basically just an in/out reference to the master video file.

Regions are created by making a selection and pressing the R key. You can also name a region.

Thanks, Marc! I think I finally get it. However, I'd like to make sure I understand on the "organize them in folders in the project media window." After reading that, I found that I can right click on Media Bins and create a new bin. Is that you mean? And drag the subclips to each bin?

Thanks again!

Found it! Thanks so much, everyone! The bins and trimmer are perfect for what I'm doing. Wow, much better than the way I've done our videos in the past!

Yep, sounds like you got it. Have fun!

If you create regions in the Trimmer and use Save Markers/Regions, your regions will be available in ANY project , from Vegas Explorer - just make sure "Region View" is enabled for its right pane.

Thanks, Megabit, I'll have to check that, too.

I'd just like to thank everyone again. This workflow is so much better than what I've done in the past!

megabit, I finally came back to that project, and tried what you said. That's great! Thanks again!

Not to hijack the thread but is there any way to delete (from hard drive) all the unwanted regions afterward without rendering out the wanted regions?
megabit wrote on 8/28/2010, 10:01 AM
It's very easy: just open the clip containing region(s) in the trimmer, delete region/marker symbols, and click "Save region/marker" again.

The given region references will vanish from your Explorer views and timeline events.

Vegas is really ingenious in some aspects ...

The trimmer window is a joy to use if you dont use it your kinda missing out on a great tool

plus the added bonus of saving jpegs from the trimmer is very handy

getting back to the sub clip thingy

you dont even need to click the make subclip button

just highlight the bit you need and drag this down onto the timeline
also think that method works with media bins by just dragging it from the trimmer into it
