How do I get DVD output into DV avi format?

This might be a really dumb question where I'm missing something totally obvious, but here goes: Say I want to re-record one of my DVDs onto miniDV format. Sure, I could just take the video cable from a DVD player and feed it to a camcorder, or better yet, use an S-video cable. But suppose I want to remain in the digital domain, and not suffer the loss of going into and out of analog?

Is there some sort of software utility that can do an on-the-fly conversion in a PC? WinDVD and PowerDVD are great for showing an image on the screen, but that's as far as they go. Is there any sort of "digital" output on the back of a DVD player? Not to my knowledge.

I know I can drag a VOB to the Vegas timeline, but that's not what I'm after.

Search this forum for dvd2avi and you'll find way more answers than you can possibly read.

Use your S-video cable and some good audio cables and be done with it. It's not going to look any better no matter how you convert it. (not counting further video editing) And converting it back to .avi is what you're doing. Cables are quickest and easiest.

I think DVD Ripper will do on-the-fly conversion to an AVI file including converting AC3 to wave. Visit DVDRHelp.com for tutorials on how to use it and very other tool like it. They have lots of tutorials on ripping DVD to DivX and you are doing the same thing except using the DV codec instead.
