I have a five minute project that I want to get out of the computer and onto VHS tape to send to a relative. Problem is, I'm not sure how to do this. I have a mini DV camera (GL1), but I don't have a separate converter.
Your actual camera could be your "at hand" converter; isn't there any outputs on this cam? If so, go from there to your VHS recorder. If not, find a cam that's got these outputs (friend, rental?). You'll have to record first on DV...and use this DV tape to output to a VHS via this borrowed cam.
Oh yeah, I forgot: you can even link your cam to the computer via FireWire + plug these outputs on your cam to your VHS and you're now able to record directly to your VHS via this "path" without having to record in DV format first... note: your cam must be set to "vcr", NOT "record" or "stand-by"...
Right, you can do this "pass-thru" method via the DV camera and use Video Capture's Print to Tape tab's Preview on Device function to lay it back to the device without actually printing, and in this case it should be feed thru to the analog VCR
Or, if you have an analog video output on your computer you can use Video Capture's full screen mode found on the Preview Preferences tab which overload the Preview on Device and Record on Device buttons to go to full screen instead of out to a DV device. Just remember to disable this preference if you do really want to go back to the DV device.
Just as a side note...I found that using the cam as a converter got old reeeeeal fast and after I started looking for a converter ended up buying a Sony WV-DR7. This unit is real slick...DV/miniDV on the left side and VHS/SVHS on the right side plus analog in/out, svid in/out and 1394 port. With this unit, the CD/DVD recorder in the computer and VV3 I can't believe what I am producing from my desktop. (I got mine through japan-direct.com)
