The host program (Vegas) has to support the codec, which in the case of LAME it doesn't. You can always render to WAV and use a third-party encoder, which is what many people do for their MPEG encoding anyway.

LAME encodes MP3's. But you don't need LAME to play the MP3.

Thanks for your reply, Planders; I'll play around with this and see how the results are. It seems rather silly to me that I have to keep using all of these third party apps, but I guess Sony must want me to try out different brands of software.

I guess I should be happy that Sony "lets" me use the DivX codec in "their" software.
